When Tim Walz and his wife, Gwen, spoke publicly about their son Gus in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, they described a diagnosis that had taken years to understand: non-verbal learning disorder, alongside ADHD and an anxiety disorder. They also rejected the idea that the diagnosis defined Gus as limited. To his parents, it helped explain how he experiences the world—and revealed qualities they see as a strength.
What Tim and Gwen Walz disclosed about Gus
The Walzes shared their statement with PEOPLE on August 7, 2024, shortly after Tim Walz was selected as Kamala Harris’s running mate. Gus was 17 at the time. His parents said he had been diagnosed as a teenager with non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD and an anxiety disorder.
They did not identify a specific anxiety disorder or provide a complete medical or developmental history. Their comments focused instead on the process of recognizing that Gus learned and interacted differently from many of his classmates, and on the ways the family worked to support him.
Tim and Gwen are both former teachers—Tim taught social studies and Gwen taught English. Even with that professional background, they said it took time to determine what support would work best for their son and how to help him succeed.

Why the Walzes called it “his secret power”
The phrase “his secret power” is the family’s description, not a medical definition of non-verbal learning disorder. The Walzes said Gus is “brilliant” and “hyper-aware of details that many of us pass by.” They also described him as an excellent son and brother.
Their point was that Gus’s diagnosis was “not a setback.” Instead of presenting the condition as a deficit that explained away his abilities, they emphasized the way his attention to detail and perspective contribute to the family.
That framing is important because the term non-verbal can easily be misunderstood. Non-verbal learning disorder does not mean that a person cannot speak. The name generally refers to difficulties with areas such as visual-spatial information, recognizing patterns, interpreting nonverbal cues, organization and completing multistep tasks. Verbal abilities may be intact or strong.
What non-verbal learning disorder means—and what it does not
NVLD is not the same as being nonspeaking, and it should not automatically be equated with autism, dyslexia, an intellectual disability or a speech disorder. The condition also does not mean a person has low intelligence.
Rank #2
Medical explainers have noted that NVLD does not currently have a formal clinical definition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. That means the label and the way it is assessed can vary, and public descriptions should not be treated as a substitute for an individual evaluation.
| Publicly reported | Not established by the public reporting |
|---|---|
| Gus was diagnosed with NVLD, ADHD and an anxiety disorder as a teenager. | The specific type or symptoms of his anxiety disorder. |
| His parents noticed differences between him and classmates while he was growing up. | A detailed developmental or medical history. |
| His parents described him as highly aware of details and called the condition “not a setback.” | That NVLD caused any particular public emotional reaction. |
Gus’s interests and milestones
The Walzes said they noticed that Gus preferred video games and spending more time by himself than some of his peers. Those details were offered as part of the family’s account of recognizing differences, not as a complete description of his personality or a diagnostic checklist.
His parents have also spoken publicly about ordinary milestones. Tim celebrated Gus passing his driver’s-license exam in October 2023. That moment offered a glimpse of the family’s pride without reducing Gus to a diagnosis.
PEOPLE reported that Tim and Gwen welcomed their daughter, Hope, in January 2001, and Gus in October 2006. The family’s private account later became part of a much larger public conversation after Tim entered the 2024 presidential campaign as Harris’s running mate.

Attention intensified after Gus’s emotional response to Tim’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 21, 2024. As his father spoke, Gus stood, pointed toward him and said, “That’s my dad!”
Tim addressed his family during the speech, saying, “Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world and I love you.” The moment was widely shared because it showed a son openly celebrating his father.
It is important not to draw a medical conclusion from that scene. Gus’s ability to speak, point, stand and express excitement does not conflict with the meaning of NVLD. At the same time, the public record does not establish that his diagnoses caused or explained his reaction. The moment can be understood as an emotional family exchange without turning it into evidence about his condition.
A family account rather than a clinical case study
The Walzes’ comments provide a limited but personal account of raising a child whose learning profile was not immediately obvious. They describe a family noticing differences, seeking answers and adjusting its approach. They do not offer enough information to explain how Gus was assessed, what accommodations he received or how his diagnoses affect him day to day.
Rank #4
That distinction matters. A public figure’s disclosure can help people understand that learning disorders do not look identical in every person. But Gus’s experience should not be used to diagnose others, interpret his behavior from a distance or assume that every person with NVLD shares the same strengths and challenges.
For the Walzes, the central message was more direct: Gus is not defined by the diagnoses his parents disclosed. They see his attention to detail, intelligence and family relationships as central parts of who he is—and describe those qualities as a source of strength.

Why did Tim and Gwen Walz call the disorder Gus’s “secret power”?
They said Gus is brilliant, highly aware of details that others may miss, and an excellent son and brother. They described the condition as “not a setback”; “secret power” was their personal characterization, not a clinical term.
Was Gus Walz’s reaction at the Democratic National Convention caused by his diagnoses?
The public reporting does not establish that connection. Gus’s emotional response to his father’s speech was a family moment, but it should not be used to draw conclusions about his diagnoses.
The Bottom Line
Tim and Gwen Walz’s account presents Gus’s diagnoses as one part of his life, not a definition of his abilities or character. They described the time it took to understand how he learned, emphasized his intelligence and attention to detail, and asked the public—implicitly through their framing—to see him as a whole person rather than a medical label.
