Neither platform is best for every streamer. TikTok LIVE is built around vertical, mobile-first viewing and discovery across TikTok surfaces. YouTube Live offers more production options, including mobile, webcam, encoder and console workflows, and supports vertical and horizontal live streams—including concurrent broadcasts in both formats. Choose based on how you want to produce, where your audience is, and which features your account can actually use; neither platform’s documentation guarantees reach or earnings.

Where TikTok LIVE has an advantage
Vertical viewing and in-app discovery
TikTok describes LIVE videos as discoverable through the LIVE, For You and Following feeds, inbox, search and profiles. That makes TikTok a natural option if your content is designed for a phone screen and you want viewers to encounter the broadcast while already using TikTok. These surfaces describe possible discovery routes, not a promise that a stream will be recommended or seen.
Mobile-first interaction
TikTok LIVE is a fit for streamers whose format depends on direct, real-time interaction in a vertical presentation. LIVE Studio also supports portrait and landscape previews and provides production and engagement tools. Its availability is conditional: a creator needs LIVE access to use it. Where YouTube Live has an advantage
More documented production routes
YouTube documents live streaming from mobile, webcam, encoder and console. An encoder workflow gives a streamer more control over a multi-source broadcast, such as one using a camera, microphones and other audio equipment; it is not required for every stream. YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through video and chat. Review YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance for the available routes and account requirements.
Horizontal, vertical or concurrent streams
YouTube’s Live Control Room can create a horizontal 16:9 stream and a vertical 9:16 stream concurrently. Viewers use one shared URL and chat, while vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts feed. The formats do not expose identical features: YouTube’s format table lists clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K bitrate streaming for broadcasts, Premieres and Live redirect for horizontal streams; vertical live feed is scrollable and Shorts-discoverable. Both formats list memberships and gifted memberships. Check the current format comparison before planning around a particular feature, as platform capabilities can change.

Eligibility: check your account before choosing
TikTok LIVE access
TikTok says creators must be at least 18 to go LIVE and generally lists a 1,000-follower threshold, which varies by region. LIVE Gifts have separate eligibility requirements and are not available everywhere. Confirm access and feature availability in your account and location rather than assuming a general threshold applies to you. See TikTok’s LIVE overview and age requirements for TikTok LIVE.
YouTube Live access
YouTube lists channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days among the requirements to stream; the minimum age is 16. Mobile live streaming has additional requirements. Check the current YouTube setup requirements for your intended method, especially if you plan to stream from a phone.

Monetization: distinguish eligibility from income
TikTok LIVE Gifts
LIVE Gifts and other TikTok monetization features depend on account eligibility and regional availability. Being able to go LIVE does not establish that Gifts are enabled for your account. Review the requirements shown by TikTok for your location before treating Gifts as part of a plan.
YouTube Partner Program and live features
YouTube’s documented early YPP access threshold is 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last year or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. This threshold concerns early access to eligible fan-funding and shopping features; it is not the higher threshold for Watch Page ads and Shorts Feed ads. For those ad features, YouTube documents 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views. Even for a monetized live stream, ads may not serve every time: YouTube’s system determines whether to serve ad slots. The format also matters because its feature table lists live pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal streams, not the vertical live feed. Choose TikTok LIVE if
- Your show is designed primarily for vertical, phone-first viewing.
- You want to interact with viewers inside TikTok and your account has LIVE access.
- You have verified which LIVE features, including Gifts, are available to you in your region.
Choose YouTube Live if
- You want a choice of mobile, webcam, encoder or console production.
- You need horizontal presentation, or want to explore concurrent horizontal and vertical streaming.
- You are planning around YouTube’s channel-based monetization features and have checked the eligibility thresholds and format-specific limitations.
When you can support both
If you can maintain both workflows, run a controlled trial on each platform with comparable subject matter, schedule and production effort. Compare the results your own accounts provide—such as viewer interaction and whether the format suits your community—rather than assuming a platform’s discovery surfaces predict your reach. This is a practical way to assess audience fit, not a guarantee that either service will grow faster.

Copyright and originality matter on either platform
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music and other material in your stream, and review each platform’s current policies. A live format or a platform’s monetization program should not be treated as permission to reuse someone else’s work or as a guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization. Check the applicable platform rules for your content and account before you build a recurring show around third-party material.

Practical verdict
Pick the platform that matches the show you can consistently produce and the features your account can access. TikTok LIVE is the more specifically mobile-first, vertical discovery environment; YouTube Live offers broader documented production methods and a choice of horizontal, vertical or concurrent formats. Neither feature set establishes which will bring you more viewers or income, so treat your audience and format—not a universal platform ranking—as the deciding evidence.
