It does not support a reliable list of 10 athlete friends or five people Woods currently avoids. Barkley has publicly described a friendship that ended in lost contact; claims about present-day estrangements go beyond what the available accounts establish.
Why the headline’s counts do not hold up
Public accounts can document a friendship at a particular time without showing whether it continues privately. They can also record one person’s account of a falling-out without confirming the other person’s view. That distinction matters here: the strongest reporting supports three past or documented friendships, but not ten current friendships or five people Woods “stays away from.”

The evidence below identifies who described each relationship, when, and what is known about its later status. A past loss of contact is not proof that Woods currently avoids someone.
Documented athlete friendships
Michael Jordan: a close bond Woods described himself
Woods spoke about Jordan’s guidance on coping with fame and lost privacy in an interview recounted by GOLF.com. Woods said, “And Mike is almost like my big brother right now.” The feature also describes the two playing golf and socializing for more than a decade, often alongside Barkley. This is strong evidence of a close friendship during that period, but it does not establish their present private relationship.

Charles Barkley: a long friendship, followed by lost contact
Barkley has given the most detailed public account of his friendship with Woods and its breakdown. In 2009, after Woods’s car accident, Barkley told the Associated Press that celebrity friends should reach out “when things go bad,” adding, “They’re the only people who understand what it’s like.” The contemporaneous report, republished by CBS News, also quoted Barkley saying he and Jordan were Woods’s “boys” and that he could not reach Woods.
In 2011, Barkley told Golf Channel that he and Woods had talked weekly for 15 years and had not spoken since the accident. He recalled, “You think you’re friends with a guy. You talk to him once a week for 15 years. You’re like, this dude is my friend, we do things, we have fun together.” In 2014, Barkley said, “We’re not friends anymore,” as reported by The Washington Post. Golf Channel later reported Barkley’s view that Woods had chosen to sever contact and that the loss disappointed him.
Those statements describe Barkley’s perspective; the cited accounts do not give Woods’s explanation. In April 2026, Barkley said he still felt affection for Woods, had contacted Woods’s agent because he did not have Woods’s number, and wished him well, according to AS.com. That update reports Barkley’s feelings and efforts to reach Woods, not a response from Woods or confirmation that the two are back in contact.
Mark O’Meara: close in the 2000s
A 2006 Golf Digest interview captures O’Meara and Woods’s relaxed banter and shared in-jokes, supporting the description of them as close friends at that time. It does not establish whether they remain in contact today.
What the reporting says about Roger Federer
Roger Federer sometimes appears in accounts of Woods’s celebrity friendships, but the evidence is more qualified. A 2011 Golf Channel article, citing contemporaneous Sports Illustrated reporting, said Federer had distanced himself after the 2009 incident. It also questioned whether their apparent friendship was partly shaped by shared commercial representation and sponsors. The same account described mutual respect, texting, watching each other compete and joking about major titles.
This mixed, secondhand account does not establish a confirmed personal falling-out, nor does it show that Woods avoided Federer. It is safer to describe reports of a relationship that may have cooled than to label Federer an estranged friend.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and cannot—be said about estrangements
- Supported: Barkley said he and Woods lost contact after the 2009 accident and later described them as no longer friends.
- Not established: Woods’s own explanation for the break in contact, a present-day list of people he avoids, or five confirmed estrangements.
- Important distinction: The 2026 account shows Barkley still expressing goodwill and trying to reach Woods through his agent; it does not verify renewed contact.
Jordan and O’Meara belong in a historical account of Woods’s friendships, with the dates and limits made clear. Federer belongs only in a qualified discussion of reports that a relationship may have cooled. None of these sources justifies turning the headline’s numbers into a factual roster.
