The Thunderbolts* Super Bowl LIX trailer, released online on February 9, 2025, put the film’s makeshift antihero team front and center. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova doubts that the group can do anything heroic, while Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes is among the uneasy allies drawn into a dangerous mission. The trailer promoted a U.S. theatrical release of May 2, 2025; that date has passed.
What does the Thunderbolts* Super Bowl trailer show?
The trailer introduces a team assembled from characters who have often operated on the edges of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroics. Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian), John Walker, Ghost and Taskmaster are brought together for a dangerous mission that will force them to face their pasts, according to the trailer listing on Rotten Tomatoes Trailers.
The central tension is not whether the group has formidable members, but whether they can function as a team. TheWrap’s February 9, 2025, coverage describes Valentina Allegra de Fontaine assembling the characters and notes that they struggle to work together—or even agree on a name. The trailer sells that friction as part of the story rather than presenting the group as a polished unit.
Why Yelena and Alexei’s exchange matters
The trailer’s most direct statement of its emotional stakes comes in a brief exchange between Yelena and her father, Alexei. The Credits reported on February 10, 2025, that Yelena says, “We can’t do this. No one here is a hero.” Alexei answers, “Yelena, when I look at you, I don’t see your mistakes. That’s why we need each other.”

Those are lines spoken by the characters in the trailer, as reported by The Credits—not quotations from Pugh, David Harbour, or the filmmakers. They frame the team’s mismatched histories as a source of both conflict and possible solidarity. The preview establishes that doubt and mutual reliance are part of the film’s pitch; it does not, by itself, settle how the full story resolves them.
