What the Super Bowl trailer is setting up
Marvel Studios released the trailer and a new poster during the Big Game on February 9, 2025. The scene described in the trailer coverage is a courtroom exchange in which Valentina tells the room that the Avengers “aren’t coming.” The line makes their absence part of the premise rather than a passing reference: the people in danger cannot count on the MCU’s most established team to arrive and take over.
The campaign poster makes the same point in different words: “*THE AVENGERS ARE NOT AVAILABLE.” That is official poster text, while “The Avengers aren’t coming to save the day” is the editorial framing of this breakdown. The trailer coverage also notes action imagery, including explosions and car flips, but the central promise is the contrast between Avengers-scale danger and a less conventional group forced to respond. Who makes up the Thunderbolts?
Marvel’s synopsis names Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker as the team. They are recognizable MCU characters, but not a conventional Avengers roster. The lineup’s dramatic tension comes from putting these individual histories and temperaments into a mission that demands cooperation.

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the person who brings them together—and, according to the official synopsis, the one whose death trap ensnares them. Marvel describes the team as “unconventional antiheroes,” and the campaign’s other tagline, “Not super. Not heroes. Not giving up,” reinforces the distinction between their uncertain status and the Avengers’ established role. That wording suggests a team defined less by shared ideals than by necessity; it does not establish how every member will respond or whether they will become a lasting unit.
The official cast listing includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer and Wendell Edward Pierce. Disney UK identifies Pugh, Stan, Harbour, Russell, Kurylenko, John-Kamen and Louis-Dreyfus as returning MCU performers, and Pullman, Viswanathan, Bauer and Pierce as newcomers to the MCU. Disney UK Press names director Jake Schreier and producer Kevin Feige and announces Son Lux as composer. Disney’s film page carries the official cast listing and campaign text.

Why aren’t the Avengers coming?
The trailer line and poster tagline establish that the Avengers are unavailable in this story’s setup. The cited official synopsis does not give a more specific reason, so it would be premature to claim that the team has been disbanded, defeated, or deliberately kept away. The point the marketing makes is simpler: Valentina’s assembled group has to undertake the mission without relying on an Avengers rescue.
That absence also gives the premise its pressure. Marvel says the characters are caught in Valentina’s death trap and must undertake a dangerous mission that confronts the darkest corners of their pasts. The trailer’s hook therefore joins two problems: the immediate threat and the personal histories the team cannot leave behind. Anything more detailed about the trap’s mechanics or the characters’ individual arcs goes beyond what the official synopsis confirms.

What does the asterisk in Thunderbolts* mean?
The asterisk is part of the official title and the poster’s Avengers tagline: “*THE AVENGERS ARE NOT AVAILABLE.” Disney’s film page later presents the movie as “Thunderbolts*: The New Avengers.” Together, those pieces show that the asterisk and Avengers language are part of the campaign’s branding. They do not, on their own, provide an exhaustive explanation of the asterisk or settle every question about what “New Avengers” means in the film.

Thunderbolts* is already released. Disney lists a US theatrical release date of May 2, 2025, a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes. Disney UK’s announcement also gives May 2 as the UK cinema date, while GamesRadar reports May 1 for the UK and May 2 for the US. Release dates can vary by territory and local listings, so the local date is the useful one when checking a particular market.

Disney’s film page lists Disney+ streaming from August 27, 2025, and Blu-ray ownership from July 29, 2025.
