Zak Starkey, Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney joined Mantra of the Cosmos for “Rip Off,” a track previewed in June 2025. Starkey said it was not intended to sound like The Beatles: it remained a Mantra of the Cosmos recording, with the guests contributing to his band’s song.
Who collaborated on “Rip Off”?
The three Beatles-family collaborators are the sons of Ringo Starr, John Lennon and Paul McCartney: Zak Starkey, Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney. Shaun Ryder, also part of the track, is a member of Mantra of the Cosmos. The June 2025 reports identify the musicians and their family connections, but do not establish a complete release credit listing. NME and The Independent covered the collaboration.

What did each musician contribute?
In an interview with The Independent, Starkey described how the track came together: Sean added a synth part and chorus vocal, James sang and played guitar, and Ryder improvised the section between parts of the song. These are Starkey’s accounts of the contributions, rather than credits independently confirmed by a published release listing. Read The Independent interview.
Is “Rip Off” meant to sound like The Beatles?
No—not according to Starkey. NME quoted him saying, “No, it’s not (like a Beatles song)… It’s like Mantra of the Cosmos with them in it. It’s Sean of the Cosmos and James of the Cosmos, it’s still my band”. His point was about the song’s identity and the band behind it: the family connection is notable, but he described the track as Mantra of the Cosmos rather than a Beatles-style project. NME’s June 2025 report attributes the quote to Starkey in an interview with The Telegraph.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was “Rip Off” released, and is there a physical edition?
June 2025 coverage described Starkey previewing the track. The band’s official music releases catalog does not list “Rip Off” among the releases reviewed, so those sources do not establish whether it was subsequently released. The band has documented vinyl releases, but its vinyl and merchandise page does not verify a physical edition of “Rip Off.” The existence of vinyl for other songs is not evidence that this track has its own pressing.
