Threads’ music feature has moved beyond a purely hypothetical idea. Meta confirmed an internal prototype in January 2025, and a May 2026 report described testing of playable music stickers. Some users may now see the option, but Meta has not published a worldwide launch schedule or confirmed that it works for every account and region.
What Threads’ reported music feature does
The reported implementation is a music card attached to a text post, not necessarily a soundtrack that plays continuously behind it. The card is described as showing:
- Album or cover artwork
- Track title
- Artist name
- A play control
Readers can reportedly tap the control to hear a short sample in the Threads feed. That makes the design closer to a playable attachment or sticker than to background audio. There is no reliable evidence that music posts autoplay; the reported interaction is tap-to-play.
Social Media Today reported the feature in testing on May 6, 2026, with the music control expected in the composer alongside attachments such as images and polls. Social Media Today’s report is the source for those interface details.

The original prototype story is documented by TechCrunch. It should not be treated as a product-launch announcement.
Is music available to every Threads user?
Not on the evidence currently available. The May 2026 report explicitly described testing rather than a broad release. Later coverage from Storrito and ALM Corp claimed wider access, but neither is an official Meta availability notice.
Meta’s June 2026 product announcement omitted music stickers, and the current Threads posting help page documents text, links, photos, videos, GIFs, topics, and polls without establishing a universal music-sticker workflow. Availability can therefore differ by country, account, app version, rollout cohort, and licensing rights.

How to check your account
The following is a reported workflow, not a universally verified Meta procedure:

- Inspect the composer’s attachment or tool row for a music option.
- Search the available catalog and select a track.
- Choose the portion offered for preview.
- Publish the post with the music card attached.
If the option is absent, that does not by itself mean the account is malfunctioning. The feature may not have reached the account, country, app build, or account category. A third-party article describes a 30-second preview, but Meta’s official Threads documentation does not confirm a universal clip length.
How Threads differs from Instagram’s music tool
Instagram already documents music for photo posts. Its workflow is to create a photo post, tap Add music, search or choose a song, use the slider to select a section, and share. The instructions are in the Instagram Help Centre.

Calling the Threads feature “similar to Instagram” is reasonable at a high level, but the reported interaction model is not an exact copy. There is no confirmed evidence of continuous playback or autoplay on Threads.
Catalog, copyright, and account restrictions
Do not assume that every song in Instagram’s library will appear on Threads. Music rights vary by territory, rights-holder agreement, account type, commercial-use rules, platform, and post format. A track can appear in search yet be unavailable for selection or playback.

Business and other professional accounts can face a more restricted catalog because commercial-use rights differ from personal-use rights. Use original audio you own or properly licensed material when the in-app catalog does not cover your intended use.

A music post may remain visible inside Threads while being blocked from federation. Meta’s posting help documentation says a post containing copyrighted audio that violates Threads’ licensing agreements may not be shared to other fediverse servers, and the composer may warn you before publishing.
That means in-app visibility and distribution to Mastodon or other federated services are separate outcomes. Licensing restrictions can limit where the media travels outside Meta’s ecosystem.

If the music option is missing or fails
- Update Threads through the iOS App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the mobile app.
- Check whether the feature is available in your country.
- Try the mobile composer rather than the desktop website.
- Look when creating a new post; an existing post may not support adding music later.
- Check whether a business or professional account has a restricted catalog.
- If a track appears but cannot be selected, try another track; that can indicate a rights limitation rather than an app error.
- If a post loses its audio or the control disappears after publication, report the problem through Threads.
Linking or relinking Instagram is not established as a requirement. Threads is connected to Instagram at the account level, but Meta has not documented Instagram linking as a prerequisite for music stickers. See Meta’s introduction to Threads and its posting help page.
What remains unknown
- Whether Meta has completed a worldwide rollout.
- The definitive countries and account types that are eligible.
- The final preview length and whether it varies by track or territory.
- Whether desktop posting, editing, removal, and scheduling will support music cards.
- Whether the Threads catalog will match Instagram’s catalog.
- How the feature will behave when a license expires after publication.
Why Meta may be adding music
Meta has not published a specific rationale for the feature. Plausible goals include giving text posts more personality, making music discovery native, helping artists and fans discuss tracks, and narrowing a format gap with Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Social Media Today linked the test to Meta’s broader effort to improve music sharing and compete for engagement with TikTok; that is the publication’s analysis, not a stated Meta objective.
