The “alien mummies” from Peru became a meme because the small, strange-looking figures seemed almost designed to invite disbelief. But appearance is not forensic proof. The strongest evidence concerns particular samples and seized objects—not every specimen shown by Mexican journalist Jaime Maussan—and it does not establish an extraterrestrial origin.
Why the figures became a viral spectacle
In September 2023, Maussan, a journalist and UFO enthusiast, presented two purported non-human bodies to Mexico’s Congress. He said they were about 1,000 years old and unrelated to known life on Earth. The display drew attention in part because the figures looked unlike familiar human remains; online, that visual oddity became shorthand for the entire story.
That reaction is understandable, but a striking appearance cannot determine whether an object is an intact body, an assembled artifact, or something else. Forensic archaeologist Flavio A. Estrada Moreno argued in a 2023 article that television, film, and news shape popular expectations of what extraterrestrials look like. A familiar sci-fi image—or an image that seems uncanny—does not verify a specimen’s identity.
Peru’s Ministry of Culture said that no Peruvian scientific institution had confirmed a non-human origin for the objects and noted a criminal complaint concerning pre-Hispanic remains that had left Peru. That statement addressed the lack of corroboration and the provenance issue; it was not, by itself, a forensic identification of every object Maussan has presented.

What the “1,000-year-old” dating claim does—and does not—show
The age claim is often presented as though a date could establish that a body was alien. It cannot. A dating test estimates the age of the material in the sample submitted; it does not identify the sample’s species, establish where it came from, or prove that it belongs to a particular displayed object.
The UNAM laboratory invoked in the claims said its work was limited to dating submitted material. It did not determine the sample’s origin, and laboratory staff did not collect or handle the source in situ. The 2017 work concerned small samples, described by the client as skin and brain tissue; El Peruano reported the amount as approximately 0.5 grams. The laboratory said its aim was to “determine the antiquity of the sample.”

There is also an identity gap: Reuters reported that Maussan said the dating and DNA results he cited did not come from the two bodies shown to Congress. He said they concerned another specimen called “Victoria.” Therefore, even if a submitted sample is correctly dated, that result alone cannot establish the age or identity of the congressional-display figures, much less an extraterrestrial origin.
What Peru’s examination found in the seized objects
In October 2023, Peruvian authorities seized two doll-like figures and a three-fingered hand being shipped toward Mexico. When authorities presented findings in January 2024, forensic archaeologist Flavio Estrada said the figures were assembled from animal bones, while the hand contained human bones, and that the objects included modern synthetic glue. He concluded that they were not pre-Hispanic assemblages or extraterrestrials. The Associated Press quoted him: “The conclusion is simple: they are dolls assembled with bones of animals from this planet, with modern synthetic glues, therefore they were not assembled during pre-Hispanic times.”

That is a substantive forensic finding about the objects seized in Peru. It should not be silently extended to every item Maussan has shown: the available accounts do not establish that the seized figures and hand are identical to the two bodies displayed in Mexico or to every specimen featured in earlier claims.

Several episodes are often compressed into one story. Estrada’s 2023 article traces public claims to objects presented online, including an alleged 2015 discovery account, followed by objects acquired and publicized in 2016–17. Maussan’s September 2023 congressional presentation was a later episode. The October 2023 seizure in Peru involved objects described by authorities as dolls and a hand. Similar labels and appearances do not prove that these are the same artifacts.

When evaluating any extraordinary artifact claim, keep the chain of evidence attached to the specific object:
- Which item was tested? A result only bears directly on the sample taken from the identified item.
- Who collected and handled it? Collection and custody matter for assessing provenance and contamination.
- What did the test measure? Age, material composition, and biological identity are different questions.
- What conclusion follows? A date is not a species identification, and neither alone demonstrates an extraordinary origin.
- Did independent examiners study the same object? Findings about a seized figure cannot be transferred to a different specimen without evidence connecting them.
The meme captures public skepticism, not a scientific result. The more reliable conclusion comes from separating each object, sample, claim, and examination: the cited dating work was limited and not on the congressional-display bodies, while Peruvian authorities found the particular seized figures to be constructed objects made with bones and modern glue. The evidence described here does not establish that any of the items are extraterrestrial.
