In a play session described by GamesBeat, assembling and managing that version took far longer than the same actions on screen. The contrast illustrates one advantage of Hearthstone’s digital design: the software can keep track of changing game state and resolve effects without asking players to do that bookkeeping by hand.
What was the real-life Hearthstone set?
GamesBeat reported on September 25, 2014, that a physical set based on Hearthstone was listed on Taobao for 300 Chinese yuan, which the article described as about US$50 at the time. The report said the set had nothing to do with Blizzard. It does not establish who made it, whether it was authorized, or whether it is available today. GamesBeat’s 2014 report is a record of that particular listing, not a current product listing.
The set reportedly included multiple copies of cards, a game board, counters, tokens for effects such as Taunt, Silence and Deathrattle, and wheels attached to minions to track attack and health. Those pieces attempted to make the digital game’s changing state visible and manageable at a table.
Why did the physical version take longer?
GamesBeat relayed reporter Thomas Price’s account of a session with two friends. The three spent close to two hours assembling the set. Price also said that an action taking about 30 seconds digitally could take nearly five minutes in the physical version. These are observations from one reported play session, not a controlled test or a measure of every physical adaptation.

- Epic is a fantasy card gam which aims to recreate the TCG-style experience from a single box, with no additional purchases required
- Epic is a card game designed to start quickly but also to reward deep, strategic plays.
- In Epic, you take on the role of an elder god, in conflict with other elder gods.
- The cards in your deck are your champions, who fight for you, and events, which represent your will imposed on the mortal realm.
- The turn sequence is easy but there are many options to choose from
The difference was not simply the time needed to play a card. Players had to assemble the components, represent effects with tokens, and adjust wheels to reflect minions’ changing attack and health. A digital client can update those values and resolve game effects automatically; at the table, the players must handle those tasks themselves.
What digital play automates
Tracking a changing board
Attack and health can change during a match. In the reported set, wheels attached to minions represented those values. Digital play removes the need to turn or check a physical tracker every time a value changes.

Remembering effects
The reported tokens for Taunt, Silence and Deathrattle gave players physical reminders of active or relevant effects. In the game client, rules and effects can be represented and resolved by the software rather than managed through separate markers.
Resolving turns
Price’s comparison suggests that the handling of these details affected the pace of his session: a roughly 30-second digital action became close to five minutes in the tabletop version. His experience supports a narrow point about this adaptation, not a general judgment that physical card games are slow or that digital games are always faster.

Was Hearthstone designed as a digital game?
Blizzard announced Hearthstone in 2013 as a free-to-play strategy card game for Windows, Macintosh and iPad, built around customized decks and Warcraft characters. The announcement reflects a digital-first product: players build decks and play through a software client rather than using a published tabletop ruleset. Blizzard’s announcement quoted CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime describing the goal as a game “easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth.”
Price, whose account GamesBeat quoted, called the physical version “more of a fun experiment than a serious replacement for the actual game.” He concluded that the digital game used its format to streamline play and support mechanics that could be awkward or tedious to resolve in a physical copy. That is the reviewer’s assessment of this version, rather than a claim that the game could not be adapted for tabletop play.

What happened to Hearthstone publishing in mainland China?
The Taobao report is from 2014, and it should not be read as evidence of present-day service or product availability in China. In November 2022, Blizzard announced that most Blizzard game services in mainland China would stop when its NetEase licensing agreements expired on January 23, 2023. In April 2024, NetEase announced a renewed publishing agreement that included Hearthstone, with Blizzard titles planned to return sequentially beginning that summer. Those announcements document historical changes; they do not verify Hearthstone’s service status in mainland China as of October 2026.

Blizzard documented a related physical collectible in 2018: The Art of Hearthstone, a hardcover art book featuring concept art spanning the game’s earliest days through League of Explorers. Blizzard listed a standard edition at US$45 and a limited edition at US$125, limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Those are 2018 prices and edition details, not current offers. The book is an art publication, not a playable tabletop edition of Hearthstone, and its present availability is not established here.
