One traditional explanation is that people wore disguises to confuse or blend in with spirits believed to roam during Samhain, the seasonal turn marking the end of the harvest. That belief helps explain Halloween’s association with costumes, but it is not a proven single origin for every costume tradition today. The history also includes Christian observances, Scottish and Irish customs, and later American celebrations.
Why were disguises associated with Samhain?
Samhain was a Celtic seasonal festival marking the end of the harvest. In accounts of the tradition, people believed spirits could walk among the living around this turning point in the year. The Library of Congress describes disguises as a way to confuse those spirits and avoid being recognized; Smithsonian Magazine describes them as an extra precaution, with people dressing as beasts or monsters to blend in with supernatural visitors.
These are accounts of a traditional belief, not proof that all Halloween costumes descend from one ancient custom. They explain an early association between disguise and the season, while later practices added other meanings and forms.
How did Christian observances become part of Halloween?
All Saints’ Day falls on November 1. The evening before it became known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually shortened to Halloween. The Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities describe Halloween as reflecting both Samhain and Christian observances honoring martyrs and saints. It is more accurate to understand the holiday as cultural layering than as a simple replacement of one festival by another.

What were guising and souling?
Guising
By the 16th century, people in Scotland and Ireland practiced guising: children dressed in disguise visited homes to receive treats. This is an important historical parallel to modern costumed visits, though it does not establish a single, direct route from ancient Samhain to present-day trick-or-treating.
Souling
Smithsonian Magazine also describes souling, in which poor adults asked for food in exchange for prayers for the dead. The Library of Congress treats souling and guising as among several possible influences on trick-or-treating and notes that its origins are debated. The practices are related context, not interchangeable names for the same custom.

How did Halloween costumes develop in the United States?
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween customs to the United States in the 1840s, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Costumes were part of American Halloween well before trick-or-treating became widespread: the National Endowment for the Humanities points to a 1917 newspaper account of children and adults wearing costumes and masks in Washington, D.C.
The phrase “trick-or-treating” began appearing in the 1920s, Smithsonian Magazine reports, and the practice took off after World War II. Costume-wearing and door-to-door treat-seeking have connected, but not identical, histories; one should not assume that the later popularity of trick-or-treating explains when costumes first appeared in American celebrations.

The historical sources connect Halloween disguises with spirit beliefs, seasonal customs, and community celebrations. A person wearing a costume now may be taking part for fun, performance, or personal expression, but those are present-day interpretations—not motives that can be assumed for people in earlier periods.
