The familiar U.S. Christmas Eve offering is cookies and milk for Santa, with a carrot for the reindeer. It is a custom, not a checklist: leave a snack your family enjoys, adapt the tradition to what you have, or leave nothing at all.
What do people leave for Santa?
Cookies and milk are a familiar pairing in the United States. The Library of Congress Law Library describes treats as varying greatly by region and identifies milk and cookies, often with a carrot for the reindeer, as a common U.S. example (Library of Congress Law Library, “Santa Laws”). The Department of Defense’s NORAD Santa Tracker story also mentions carrots alongside Santa’s milk and cookies (NORAD’s Famous Santa Tracker Started as a Fluke).
Adapt the snack to your household
There is no universal menu. Treats differ by region and family, so you can use a local favorite, a snack already in the kitchen, or a simple cookie. A Santa-themed Q&A likewise presents cookies as a familiar favorite while allowing households to choose what they like and leave (Santa’s Den – Christmas Stories and Christmas Activities with Santa Claus).
- Keep to the familiar: leave cookies and milk, and add a carrot if that is part of your family’s version of the tradition.
- Choose a family favorite: use a treat that reflects your household’s food traditions rather than treating the U.S. custom as a worldwide rule.
- Keep it simple: a small snack—or no food offering—is a perfectly reasonable family choice.
Make the presentation optional
A special Christmas plate can make the snack feel festive, but it is not required. An ordinary plate or a simple spot on the counter works just as well; there is no need to buy anything to take part.
