Kei Tsukishima is a first-year middle blocker for Karasuno whose cool, detached manner hides a gradual change in how he approaches volleyball. Official character profiles and an anime feature fill in the details: his season-specific profile figures, why he wears sports glasses in matches, and the training-camp encounters that begin to shift his outlook.
Who is Tsukishima in Haikyu!!?
Tsukishima is a first-year student at Karasuno and plays middle blocker. The official anime profile also lists his birthday as June 21. He is presented as Karasuno’s tallest player and is recognizable by his black-framed glasses.
The official profiles give different heights in different season pages: 162.8 cm in the Season 1 profile and 164.2 cm in the Season 4 profile. These are season-specific character-profile figures; the pages do not explain the difference, so neither should be treated as a correction to the other. Season 4 also lists his maximum reach as 333 cm.
Why does Tsukishima wear sports glasses?
He wears black-rimmed glasses as his familiar everyday look, but the official anime feature says he switches to sports glasses during matches after the Jozenji match. His older brother gave them to him. The detail connects his match-day appearance to family, rather than being merely a different version of his usual frames.

His apparent indifference is part of his character arc
The official Haikyu!! anime feature describes Tsukishima’s early attitude as less passionate than Hinata’s and Kageyama’s. He can be content with an adequate result instead of pushing for a perfect one. That contrast helps explain why his relationship with volleyball feels different from teammates who throw themselves into every point.
His outlook begins to change after a joint training camp, where he meets Kuroo of Nekoma and Bokuto of Fukurodani. The official feature presents those encounters as a turning point in his thinking—not as an instant transformation, but as the start of a shift in how he relates to the sport.

Why the first-year camp matters
As Karasuno prepares for nationals, the official Season 4 profile says Tsukishima is called to the Miyagi first-year selection training camp. It is a useful counterpoint to his earlier distance from volleyball: he is being placed in a setting intended to challenge and develop promising first-years, while his motivation is already beginning to change.
