Greg “The Hammer” Valentine is a WWE Hall of Famer remembered for his punishing figure-four leglock, championship success in singles and tag-team wrestling, and key appearances at the first Starrcade and first WrestleMania. Those milestones make his career easy to place in wrestling history: he won the NWA United States Championship at Starrcade and later defended WWE’s Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania.
Who is Greg “The Hammer” Valentine?
Valentine is a professional wrestler whose career spanned major work in the NWA, WCW and WWE. WWE lists him as a 2004 Hall of Fame inductee and identifies his signature move as the figure-four leglock. Its profile gives his hometown as Seattle and bills him at 6 feet and 243 pounds; those are profile figures, not independently verified measurements. WWE’s profile highlights his singles and tag-team championships.
How did Valentine get into wrestling?
WWE’s 2007 retrospective says Valentine initially did not plan to follow his father, wrestler Johnny Valentine, into the business. A road trip with his father in the summer of 1969 changed that: he was drawn to the travel and performances, then went to Calgary to train with Stu Hart. Reflecting on the experience, Valentine said, “Between that, the excitement of the wrestling itself and seeing my father perform to sold-out crowds every night was what inspired me.” The retrospective also quotes him saying he wanted to pass on what he had learned over more than 35 years in wrestling—a description of his experience at the time, not a current career-duration claim.
What were Valentine’s defining career milestones?
First Starrcade: the NWA United States title
WWE’s profile says Valentine defeated “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in a dog-collar match at the first Starrcade to win the NWA United States Championship. The event is one of the career moments Valentine later singled out himself.

First WrestleMania: an Intercontinental title defense
At the first WrestleMania, Valentine successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship against Junkyard Dog, according to WWE. In a 2012 WWE interview, Valentine recalled appearing in seven WrestleManias and named being part of the first Starrcade among his career highlights. The seven-appearance figure is his recollection, not a separate event-count audit. In that interview, he also said he loved being Intercontinental Champion and being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

His tag-team work crossed promotions: WWE names Ric Flair as his NWA Mid-Atlantic partner and Brutus Beefcake as his WWE partner. This is a selection of WWE-highlighted achievements, not a complete career championship ledger. A reliable all-promotion title total is not established here, so an aggregate count would be misleading.

Valentine’s figure-four leglock and hard-hitting “Hammer” presentation are central to how WWE characterizes him. His career also had room for a different tone: he later described the Rhythm & Blues tag-team character as fun, even though he disliked wearing black hair. That contrast—from a tough singles competitor to a lighter tag-team act—helps explain why his career cannot be reduced to one persona.
