Some Warner Bros. Home Entertainment DVDs manufactured between 2006 and 2008 may be defective—but the company said the issue affects select titles, not every disc from those years. Warner Bros. acknowledged the problem and described replacing defective discs where possible; it did not publish a comprehensive list of affected titles or a failure rate.
What Warner Bros. confirmed
In a statement reported by Ars Technica in March 2025, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment said it was aware of “potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008” and had been working with consumers to replace defective discs. The company said it supplied the same title when possible. If a title was out of print or its rights had expired, consumers were offered an exchange for a title of like value. Ars Technica and JoBlo reproduced the statement.
That is a limited acknowledgment, not confirmation that every Warner Bros. DVD made during those years is deteriorating. The statement identifies a manufacturing window and select titles, but does not name a complete set of affected releases. It also does not establish a current failure rate.
What failure can look like
Collectors have reported discs that stop partway through, freeze, fail to load, or have trouble with particular features or extras. A disc can look normal and still have playback problems: bronzing or other visible discoloration is not a necessary symptom, according to reporting by Ars Technica.

Optical discs can degrade through problems such as data-layer deterioration or delamination, and heat or humidity can accelerate damage. Preservation professionals have also documented physical damage from handling and packaging. These are general disc risks, not proof of what caused a particular Warner disc to fail. A specific plant or manufacturing explanation for the Warner reports has not been substantiated by the company.
How to check a disc and ask about a replacement
- Record the symptoms. Note the title, edition, player or drive, and where playback stops or which feature fails. A clean appearance does not rule out a problem.
- Try another known-working device. Test the disc in a player or drive that reads other DVDs reliably. A USB external DVD drive can serve as a second device. If the same fault occurs on more than one device, that makes a player-specific problem less likely; it does not diagnose the disc’s physical or chemical cause.
- Contact Warner Bros. Home Entertainment using its current support instructions. The company’s statement, as reported in 2025, gave [email protected] as a contact. The current replacement process and contact details have not been independently established here, so check Warner Bros.’ current support information before sending personal details or mailing a disc.
- Ask what exchange, if any, applies to your title. The reported policy was same-title replacement where possible, or an exchange for a title of like value if the original was out of print or rights had expired. The statement does not promise a replacement for every inquiry, a refund, or a particular substitute.
Should you buy another copy or look for a later edition?
A second copy is not automatically safer. If a title had a single or limited pressing, another copy from that run may have the same vulnerability. James Steffen of Emory University’s Woodruff Library warned about this possibility in comments included in a 2021 Library Copyright Alliance filing.

Check whether a later edition exists before buying another copy, and compare its contents against the disc you need. A Blu-ray, reissue, or digital edition may not include the DVD’s bonus features or other material. Examples cited in the filing include Joan Crawford Collection Volume 2 (Warner Bros., 2008) and Reflection in a Golden Eye (Warner Bros., 2006); these are examples from a preservation context, not a complete list of affected titles.
Ars Technica noted that a collector-created list of potentially affected releases exists but may contain inaccuracies. Neither that list nor the cited examples should be treated as a definitive catalog of defective discs.
