What counts as a movie musical?
A ranking depends partly on how it defines “musical.” The compiled list includes films where music is central to the movie, but its inclusion of music biopics shows that the boundary is not limited to traditional stories in which characters break into song. In July 2026, the Associated Press reported that Michael had become the highest-grossing musical biopic, illustrating how the category can expand depending on the ranking’s rules.

Concert films, jukebox musicals, and biopics can each raise classification questions. The five entries above follow the compiled list’s categorization; they should not be read as a universal definition of the genre.
Why inflation changes the historical comparison
The nominal ranking answers which films have the largest reported dollar totals, not which films sold the most tickets or attracted the largest audiences. Older films earned money when ticket prices were lower, and box-office totals also reflect market size and international pricing.
The same compiled ranking gives separate inflation-adjusted estimates, dated 2019, of $2.572 billion for The Sound of Music and $1.977 billion for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Those estimates put historical releases ahead of the nominal leaders, but they are a different measure and should not be mixed into the table above.

Worldwide grosses can shift when films return to theaters or databases revise reported totals. Genre membership can change too. The 2026 live-action Moana is listed as a musical by box-office databases, so a developing theatrical release could affect future rankings. This article’s figures are a 2026 snapshot, not a permanent record.
