The documentaries are American Nightmare, American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders, and What Jennifer Did. The descriptions below reveal key turns in the last film.
How the three documentaries differ
| Documentary | Source of unease | Case setting | Spoiler tolerance |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Nightmare | Institutional disbelief and investigative failure | A 2015 kidnapping case in California | Low: the basic case outcome is central to understanding the premise. |
| American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders | An unresolved death and far-reaching conspiracy claims | Journalist Danny Casolaro’s 1991 death and his investigation | Higher if you prefer to discover the case’s questions as the series unfolds; the allegations are not settled findings. |
| What Jennifer Did | Family deception and violence | A 2010 home invasion account in Canada | Low: the explanation behind the account is a major revelation. |
The “scared me” framing is Andy Meek’s personal reaction in his April 5, 2024 BGR watchlist, not an objective ranking. Choose by the kind of unease you want, rather than expecting three versions of the same true-crime story.
American Nightmare: when investigators doubt the victims
Meek describes the series as revisiting the 2015 kidnapping of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn in California. Police initially treated the couple’s account as a hoax; Huskins reappeared days later with evidence of sexual assault. Meek says the later arrest of a serial rapist vindicated the couple. The tension comes from the gap between what the couple reported and how authorities responded—not from a conventional mystery about whether they were telling the truth.
This is the pick for viewers unsettled by institutional disbelief and the consequences of an investigation going badly. That summary reflects Meek’s account of the documentary; it should not be taken as an independent claim that the series proves every detail of the case.

American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders: an unfinished investigation
Netflix describes this as a four-part docuseries released February 28, 2024. It follows photojournalist Christian Hansen as he retraces the work of Danny Casolaro, a journalist who died in 1991 while pursuing a sprawling story he called “The Octopus,” involving alleged government corruption and corporate espionage. The documentary’s central unease is the scale of the claims and the questions surrounding Casolaro’s death—not proof that a single conspiracy existed.
Netflix’s synopsis says police ruled Casolaro’s death a suicide, while his family and colleagues believed he may have been murdered. Those are distinct positions: the official ruling is not the same as the family’s and colleagues’ belief. Interviewee Michael Riconosciuto claims insider knowledge, and the series follows Hansen’s renewed work on the unfinished investigation. Netflix Tudum names Zachary Treitz as director. Treitz described the experience this way: “It’s like a horror movie in some respects for me, getting sucked into a story like this.”

As Meek recounts it, the film begins with Jennifer Pan’s claim that unknown intruders broke into her family’s home in 2010 and shot her parents. The account later gives way to revelations of deception and the death of Pan’s mother. The unease comes from the contrast between the reported attack and what is ultimately uncovered, as well as the family expectations, manipulation, and violence in the story.
