Spoilers for both seasons of Them. The Season 2 finale reveals that Detective Dawn Reeve and Edmund Gaines are twins, separated as children, and that Ruby Emory—the mother from Season 1’s Them: Covenant—is their biological mother. Dawn’s recovered memories help her reach Edmund and halt the Scare’s immediate threat to her and her son, Kel, but Edmund dies. The final image then makes clear that the Season 1 haunting has followed Dawn into the present.

What happens in the finale?

As the truth about Edmund and the Scare comes into focus, Dawn remembers the childhood she and Edmund shared. That memory gives her a way to reach him and interrupt the Scare’s immediate attack on her and Kel. Edmund dies, however, so Dawn’s intervention ends the immediate danger without saving her brother.

The case also reaches a limited legal resolution. Ready Steady Cut reports that Dawn’s recording supports a self-defense account and the charges against her are dropped. She leaves the police force, while the final supernatural image makes clear that the danger around her is not over.

Who is Edmund Gaines, and is he the killer?

Edmund is Dawn’s twin brother. They were separated as children, and Dawn did not know the full truth about her origins or their shared past. Edmund, by contrast, remained haunted by their childhood abuse and resented that Dawn did not remember it.

Calling Edmund simply “the killer” blurs an important distinction in the show’s supernatural plot. The recaps distinguish one killing Edmund commits while alive from the later murders attributed to the Scare, a force associated with his pain, anger, and transformation. The Scare is connected to Edmund, but the account of the finale does not reduce every murder to an ordinary act by him.

How does Season 2 connect to Season 1?

The connection is family, not just a recurring ghost. Dawn finds a photograph of the Emory family and recognizes the resemblance; the finale identifies Ruby Emory as Dawn and Edmund’s biological mother. Ruby is part of the family story in Season 1’s Them: Covenant.

After Dawn sees the photograph, Da Tap Dance Man appears to her. The Season 1 haunting is therefore an active threat in Dawn’s story, not merely a visual callback or a resolved piece of the past. The finale does not explain what will happen next.

What does the ending mean?

One defensible reading is that the show makes buried family history and unacknowledged trauma part of its horror. Dawn’s recovered memory lets her reconnect with Edmund, but that emotional breakthrough does not undo their losses. The return of Da Tap Dance Man suggests that the older haunting—and the harm carried through the family’s history—has not disappeared.

This is an interpretation of the plot rather than a confirmed explanation of a particular scene. In an interview with TheWrap published June 4, 2024, creator and showrunner Little Marvin said, “I don’t know how to divorce great horror from some level of trauma.” The remark offers context for the series’ approach to horror; it is not a direct explanation of the finale’s individual images.
