It follows a singing pony who becomes a sparkly unicorn and discovers that fame comes with complications. It is fiction, not a documentary, and its portrayal of celebrity is comic storytelling rather than reporting. Below is what is established about the film, with the dates, credits and limits attached.
What the film is about
A pony named Thelma dreams of music stardom. Her transformation into a unicorn is an accident: according to Netflix Tudum, a truck spills paint and glitter across the farm. Netflix’s official synopsis says the sparkly new Thelma finds that celebrity brings complications, and the film follows that rise through her friendships and her ambitions. Tudum describes the result as a quirky, heartfelt ride.
The premise works on two levels for younger viewers. The surface is a colourful magical makeover; underneath is a question about what changes when a person who wants to be seen gets exactly that. The film presents this through a cartoon world, so the celebrity dynamics are invented for the story and should not be read as a portrait of real performers or the music industry.
When did Thelma the Unicorn arrive on Netflix?
Netflix Media Center lists the film’s Netflix release time as May 17, 2024 at 7:00 AM GMT. That moment is midnight on May 17 in US Pacific time, and it lands on a different calendar day in some other parts of the world, so the local date a viewer saw first may differ. The film has been in Netflix’s catalogue since then. Availability is not permanent for any title, so confirm it appears on your own country’s Netflix page before planning a viewing.

Rating, languages and where you can watch it
Netflix’s US title page lists the film as PG. Regional ratings are assigned by local bodies and can differ, so a family in another country should check the rating shown on their local Netflix page rather than relying on the US label.
The title page lists an English original soundtrack, audio-description and dubbed audio options, and several subtitle options. Which of these appear depends on the territory, so the language list on your local page is the one that counts.

Who made it, and where the story comes from
Jared Hess and Lynn Wang directed the released film, according to Netflix Tudum. The film adapts Aaron Blabey’s children’s picture book Thelma the Unicorn, which is the source of the characters and the basic premise. Netflix’s adaptation announcement, dated June 5, 2019, reported that the book had sold over 1.6 million copies and had been distributed in 14 countries at that time. Those are historical figures from 2019, not current sales or distribution counts, and no later total is stated in the material available here.
Viewers who enjoy the film and want the original can find the picture book, but the film does not require any reading beforehand. It stands on its own.

Is the music the main attraction?
The film is a musical, and the music is built around its lead singer. Netflix Tudum reports that the directors wanted Brittany Howard’s voice to run through the whole score. Jared Hess told Netflix: “One of the biggest things right out of the gate is that we really wanted to showcase Brittany’s voice in all of the music in the film, and really wanted her to connect with everything personally.”
Lynn Wang, speaking in the same Tudum feature about the parallels between Howard and Thelma, said: “She wanted to be a singer but everyone doubted her and doubted that she could make it big.”

What about the song list?
Tudum says a complete list of songs follows its article, but that list is not reproduced in the text available for this article. Song titles, writing credits and performance credits are therefore not given here. The musical emphasis itself is confirmed; the track-by-track detail is not.
No separate soundtrack album has been verified for this film. If you are looking for music to play afterward, the reliable route is the track list on the Netflix title page, or the complete list in the Tudum article, rather than a third-party playlist.

Is it right for your family?
Whether the film suits a particular child depends on a few practical checks:
- Format: It is an animated film with songs woven through the story, so it works best for viewers who enjoy musical numbers rather than a straight comedy.
- Tone: Netflix describes it as quirky and heartfelt. The humour is broad, and the emotional beats concern ambition, friendship and self-worth.
- Premise: Fame and identity are the central themes. Children who are old enough to talk about being pressured to be someone else tend to get more from the story.
- Language and rating: Check the rating and the audio and subtitle options on your own country’s Netflix page before you start.
The film is a family-friendly animated musical, not a documentary, and it should be approached as a fictional comedy about a pony who wants to be a star.
Reviews and audience responses are not covered here, so this article does not judge the film’s quality or popularity.
