Its appeal rests on more than the joke of an older hero borrowing the language of action movies: the film also asks how family concern can coexist with an older person’s independence.
What is Thelma about?
Thelma Post, played by June Squibb, is conned by someone impersonating her grandson. Rather than accept the loss, she sets out across Los Angeles to recover her money, joined by an aging friend and his motorized scooter. The premise takes a familiar phone-scam scenario and gives it the forward momentum of a mission.
Director Josh Margolin has described the film as drawing inspiration from action movies including Mission: Impossible, while also grounding the story in family and aging. The result is not a high-stakes spy thriller scaled down; it uses the rhythms and bravado of an action adventure for a modest, personal goal.
Does June Squibb carry the film?
Squibb’s performance gives Thelma’s determination its comic force. The humor works best when it comes from her commitment to the task rather than from treating her age as the punchline. Magnolia Pictures says Squibb performed many of her own stunts—a meaningful part of the film’s physical-comedy appeal, though not a claim that she did every stunt.

The role is a notable change of scale for Squibb: it is her first leading role in a film. She brings a lived-in sense of stubbornness to a character who is neither a passive victim nor an implausible action super-soldier. The film’s central pleasure is watching her insist on being the person who acts.
How well does the action-comedy approach work?
The action-movie echoes give Thelma’s errand an amusing sense of occasion. A trip to reclaim stolen money becomes a mission, and the contrast between genre-style determination and the everyday world around her supplies much of the comedy. The reference to Mission: Impossible is a framing device, not a promise of elaborate set pieces; the adventure remains rooted in one woman’s practical objective.
That small scale is also a tonal advantage. The scam is a real source of distress, but the film does not stay in the register of victimization. It turns the recovery attempt into something playful without making the underlying violation meaningless. The Associated Press described the film at Sundance as a grounded, Mission: Impossible-inspired comedy, a useful shorthand for the blend it aims to achieve.
Does the family story respect Thelma’s autonomy?
The family dimension gives the adventure a second question: when relatives worry about an older person, are they protecting her or taking choices away from her? The film’s strongest thematic possibility lies in holding both ideas at once. Concern can be sincere, and Thelma can still have the right to make decisions, take risks, and pursue her own plan.

VVS Films identifies aging, family, and autonomy as central themes. That lens helps distinguish affectionate humor from condescension: the story needs Thelma’s relatives to have understandable concerns, but it also needs to recognize that concern does not erase her agency. The adventure is most satisfying when her family’s worry does not become the final word on what she can do.

Thelma is Margolin’s feature directorial debut, and it gives Squibb her first film-leading role. Those facts suit a movie built around an unusual action-comedy hero: the premise is modest, but its point of view is clear. Instead of presenting age only as vulnerability, it makes an older woman’s persistence the engine of the plot.
The film’s charm depends on that balance. Its scam setup supplies real stakes, its action-film playfulness keeps the journey buoyant, and Squibb’s performance gives the character enough resolve to make the comedy feel earned. The result is a warm, unconventional caper whose central idea is simple: being underestimated does not mean being incapable.
