T-Series was the first YouTube channel to reach 100 million subscribers. Guinness World Records identifies the Indian music and film channel as the first overall, ahead of PewDiePie. Its record page gives 29 April 2019 in the achievement sentence, though a separate date field on the same page says 29 May 2019.
Who reached 100 million subscribers first?
It was T-Series, not PewDiePie. Guinness World Records describes T-Series as a music-video and film-trailer channel from India and records it as the first YouTube channel to pass the 100-million-subscriber mark. Guinness’s record entry states the achievement date as 29 April 2019.
There is a date discrepancy worth noting: the entry’s separate “When” metadata field says 29 May 2019. Its explicit achievement sentence says 29 April, so that is the date given in the record’s description, but the page does not present the two fields consistently.
How close was the race with PewDiePie?
The milestone followed a high-profile contest between T-Series and PewDiePie, the channel of creator Felix Kjellberg. Guinness says the competition had been close since October 2018. At one point in March 2019, both channels had passed 90 million subscribers within hours of one another, according to Guinness’s 2019 coverage.

PewDiePie was a major rival in the race, but he was not the first channel to reach 100 million. Guinness identifies T-Series as the overall record-holder for that first milestone.
What does the 100-million milestone mean?
The 100 million figure is a subscriber milestone for a YouTube channel. YouTube’s corresponding Creator Award tier is the Red Diamond Creator Award. The Creator Awards eligibility page says membership in the YouTube Partner Program is not required to be eligible for an award.

Was BLACKPINK the first channel to reach 100 million?
Not overall. On 20 February 2026, YouTube reported that BLACKPINK became the first Official Artist Channel to reach 100 million subscribers, and said it presented the group with a custom Red Diamond Creator Award. That is a record within the Official Artist Channel category, not a replacement for T-Series’ earlier first-overall milestone. YouTube’s announcement makes that category distinction explicit.
