Falcons Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia is currently the world’s fastest roller coaster by published maximum speed. Its advertised top speed is 250 km/h, or 155.3 mph, narrowly ahead of Formula Rossa’s 240 km/h (149.1 mph). That changes the answer found in many older articles, which still name Formula Rossa as the number-one speed coaster.
This ranking uses each coaster’s published maximum speed, not launch acceleration, height, airtime, or a subjective measure of intensity. Because parks describe speed in different ways—and because maintenance and seasonal closures can change ride availability—the list is best read as a published-speed ranking with operating-status notes, not a guarantee that every attraction is running today.

Sources and method: The ranking combines the Roller Coaster Database’s current world speed table with official park or operator descriptions for ride-specific figures. Metric equivalents are rounded from the published mph figures, while official km/h figures are retained where the park publishes them.
What the ranking actually measures
A coaster’s published maximum speed is not always a like-for-like engineering measurement. Formula Rossa and Red Force emphasize a launch, Superman: Escape from Krypton publishes a launch figure, and Steel Dragon 2000 and Fury 325 are traditional lift-hill coasters whose advertised speed is reached later in the layout. The ranking therefore answers one specific question: which attractions have the highest publicly stated maximum speeds?

It does not answer which coaster accelerates fastest, produces the most airtime, has the tallest drop, feels most intense, or is the best overall ride. A 120 mph launch and a 120 mph peak reached after a long climb would also create very different experiences, even if they occupied the same place in a speed table.
The fastest coasters, explained
1. Falcons Flight — 155.3 mph (250 km/h)
Falcons Flight, at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia, takes the top position with an official published speed of 250 km/h. RCDB identifies it as the current world speed leader. That makes it the first name to look for in a current answer to the question of the world’s fastest roller coaster.
The important qualification is availability. An attraction being listed on an official park page or in a database does not by itself prove that it is operating on the day of a visitor’s trip. Check Six Flags Qiddiya City’s current calendar and operating notices before making travel plans.
2. Formula Rossa — 149.1 mph (240 km/h)
Formula Rossa at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi remains one of the world’s fastest coasters, even though it has been overtaken by Falcons Flight. Ferrari World describes a launch from 0 to 240 km/h. That is a launch-focused specification, not an independently measured comparison with every other coaster on this list.

At the time of research, Ferrari World’s attraction page displayed Closed for maintenance. Because that notice can change, readers should verify the live status directly with Ferrari World before treating Formula Rossa as a rideable part of an itinerary.
3. Top Thrill 2 — 120 mph (193 km/h)
Top Thrill 2 at Cedar Point in Ohio is the third-fastest coaster by the published figures used here. The redesigned attraction is a triple-launch coaster and retains a maximum speed of 120 mph. Its position also makes Cedar Point the only park in this ranking with two entries: Top Thrill 2 and Millennium Force.
4. Red Force — 111.8 mph (180 km/h)
Red Force at Ferrari Land, part of PortAventura World in Spain, reaches a published 180 km/h. PortAventura states that the ride accelerates from 0 to 180 km/h in five seconds and identifies Red Force as Europe’s fastest coaster. It is the fastest entry on the list located in Europe by the ranking’s published-speed method.

Superman: Escape from Krypton at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California requires especially careful wording. Six Flags advertises a backward launch from 0 to 100 mph, while the same official description gives the return descent as 92 mph. Those are different figures describing different parts of the ride; the 100 mph launch is the published maximum used for this ranking.
Live availability can vary, so visitors should check Six Flags Magic Mountain’s current operating information rather than assuming the attraction is running.

Building with K’NEX puts children on a path towards a fundamental understanding of STEAM/STEM subjects.
6. Steel Dragon 2000 — 95 mph (153 km/h)
Steel Dragon 2000 at Nagashima Spa Land in Japan reaches up to 153 km/h according to the park’s official description. Its sixth-place position is not meaningfully different from Fury 325’s seventh-place position: both are published at 95 mph.
7. Fury 325 — 95 mph (153 km/h)
Fury 325 at Carowinds in North Carolina shares the 95 mph figure with Steel Dragon 2000. Carowinds describes it as North America’s fastest giga coaster. The displayed order here is editorial only; it does not indicate that Fury 325 is slower than Steel Dragon 2000.

11. Pantherian — 90 mph (145 km/h)
Pantherian at Kings Dominion in Virginia is listed at 90 mph. The current name matters here: use Pantherian rather than an obsolete project name or former attraction label when comparing current park offerings.
12. Hyperion — 88.2 mph (142 km/h)
Hyperion at Energylandia in Zator, Poland, has a published maximum of 142 km/h, equivalent to approximately 88.2 mph. It is the second European entry after Red Force and the fastest coaster in Poland on this list by published speed.
13. Tormenta Rampaging Run — 87 mph (140 km/h)
Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas closes the ranking at 87 mph. RCDB records the ride as a 309-foot, 95-degree dive coaster. Its speed is lower than the launches at the top of the table, but the height and near-vertical dive are separate design characteristics and are not used to change its position.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Launch speed versus traditional coaster speed
The list contains two broad types of speed story. Formula Rossa, Red Force, Top Thrill 2, and Superman: Escape from Krypton are associated with powerful launches, so their headline numbers are reached through acceleration systems or launch sections. Steel Dragon 2000, Fury 325, Millennium Force, Leviathan, Orion, Pantherian, Hyperion, and Tormenta Rampaging Run demonstrate that a conventional lift hill and a long, fast layout can still produce a world-leading published maximum.
That distinction is why speed alone is a poor substitute for a full ride comparison. The same top-speed number can be reached at a different point in the course, sustained for a different length of time, or paired with a completely different height and layout. This article ranks the numbers parks and specialist databases publish; it does not claim that one format feels faster to every rider.

Planning a trip to one of these coasters
The ranking spans Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Japan, Poland, Canada, and the United States. For a U.S. road trip, the Ohio cluster is especially notable: Cedar Point has Top Thrill 2 and Millennium Force, while Kings Island has Orion and Kings Dominion has Pantherian farther east. Internationally, Red Force, Hyperion, Formula Rossa, and Falcons Flight represent very different destination decisions rather than neighboring park stops.
Before spending money, check each park’s live calendar, maintenance notices, weather policy, seasonal schedule, and official park tickets. Formula Rossa’s maintenance notice is a useful reminder that an attraction can remain prominent in a world ranking while being unavailable on a particular date. Availability, opening hours, and ride policies can change after publication.
For coaster enthusiasts who want more context
Speed records are only one chapter of roller-coaster history. If you want the engineering milestones, record changes, park histories, and design decisions behind attractions like these, a roller-coaster history book is a better next step than treating the speed table as a complete measure of coaster quality.
Source and status note
Roller Coaster Database marks non-operating attractions with an asterisk and does not ordinarily assign them a position in its standard rankings. This article preserves the supplied published-speed order while adding operating-status qualifications, so it should not be read as a promise that all 13 coasters are open on the publication date. Always confirm directly with the relevant park before traveling.
