The Witcher Season 4 Review: Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt Faces Mixed Reviews

Liam Hemsworth earns praise for Geralt’s fight scenes, but reviews are less settled on the quieter moments. Season 4’s pacing and endgame setup also divide opinion.

The Witcher Season 4 gives Liam Hemsworth his first run as Geralt, but the evidence does not support saying he has “silenced haters.” One review applauds his physicality in combat while remaining unsure about his quieter scenes; broader criticism also targets the season’s pacing and its emphasis on setting up the finale. The result is a mixed, qualified verdict—not a critical reversal.

What changes in Season 4?

Season 4 premiered on Netflix on October 30, 2025, with Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill. Netflix described Seasons 4 and 5 as the series’ final two chapters. The story divides its central trio: Geralt travels with the hansa, Yennefer gathers mages, and Ciri joins the Rats, each pursuing a separate path. Netflix’s release announcement and cast guide outline that setup.

That separation changes the season’s center of gravity. Geralt remains the title character, but his story is one strand in a wider ensemble rather than the only through-line. The season is also part of a planned conclusion: Netflix says Season 5 will be the final season and that the two seasons adapt material from Andrzej Sapkowski’s Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Netflix’s production announcement describes Season 4 as the penultimate season.

Is Liam Hemsworth good as Geralt?

The clearest positive case in the cited reviews is physical. PC Gamer reviewer Jody Macgregor calls Hemsworth “entirely believable as a superhuman witcher” in the brutal fight scenes. But Macgregor also says the first four episodes left him unsure how he felt about Hemsworth when Geralt was not fighting. That distinction matters: action presence is not the same as a settled judgment on the character’s quieter moments.

This makes a simple Cavill-versus-Hemsworth verdict less useful than asking whether Hemsworth can carry both sides of Geralt: the formidable fighter and the more restrained presence between battles. The cited response offers support for the first, but uncertainty about the second. It does not establish that critics as a group have changed their minds. PC Gamer’s review gives the specific assessment.

Is The Witcher season 4 hard to follow?

One review describes a difficult return to the story. TechRadar’s Tom Power says the season is hard to follow at first and that its opening four episodes do not ease viewers back into the drama. He finds the later run—episodes 5–8—may be among the franchise’s strongest. Taken together, that is a split pacing verdict: an initially demanding setup followed by a more rewarding back half, in one reviewer’s view, rather than a claim that every episode works equally well. Read TechRadar’s review.

Does Season 4 work on its own?

The season’s three separated journeys create room for different alliances and storylines, but they also make the installment feel like part of a larger transition. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus says the series is “beginning to grow stale” and “dutifully sets up the series’ endgame without having enough fun along the way.” That is the aggregator’s consensus wording, not a statement that every critic—or every viewer—shares the same view. Its emphasis on endgame setup aligns with Netflix’s plan to finish the adaptation in Season 5, while also identifying the risk: a season can advance the finale without feeling fully satisfying by itself. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 4 page displays the consensus.

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich framed the two-season arc as a reunion journey: “This is the beginning of a two-season journey for our family to finally reunite and be together — hopefully forever.” She also cautioned against expecting a tidy resolution, saying, “One of the things we always say is that it wouldn’t be The Witcher if everything ended happily.” Both statements appeared in Netflix’s announcement. They describe the intended direction, not a guarantee that Season 4 resolves its own storylines.

How does Liam Hemsworth compare with Henry Cavill as Geralt?

The available reviews support a limited comparison, not a definitive ranking. They identify Hemsworth’s combat work as convincing and leave his quieter characterization an open question. They do not provide a like-for-like assessment of both actors across the same scenes or establish a general critical consensus about which interpretation is better. Viewers deciding whether the recast works for them should therefore distinguish the physical demands of Geralt’s action scenes from the subtler question of how Hemsworth inhabits the character outside them.

Is The Witcher season 4 worth watching?

For viewers following the Netflix adaptation, Season 4 offers a new Geralt, three parallel journeys, and a clearer route toward the announced final season. The cited reviews suggest patience may be needed through a confusing opening stretch; one reviewer finds the later episodes notably stronger, while the overall critical consensus raises concerns about staleness and finale setup. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on how much you enjoy the broader ensemble and are willing to watch a penultimate chapter rather than a self-contained endpoint.

If you want to read the source material, Baptism of Fire is one of the novels Netflix names among the books adapted across Seasons 4 and 5. It is a novel, not a recap of the show, and the announced adaptation covers material across both seasons.
