Prime Video’s The Sticky takes inspiration from a real 2011–2012 theft of Quebec’s maple syrup reserve, but its caper plot and central characters are fictional. The real syrup was siphoned from barrels over months and replaced with water; the theft was discovered in 2012.
What was the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist?
It was a large-scale theft from Quebec’s reserve stocks of maple syrup. The operation stretched across 2011 and 2012, according to retrospective accounts; TIME reports that a routine inventory uncovered the theft in July 2012.
Amazon Canada’s 2022 series announcement said more than C$18 million worth of syrup was stolen. It also described the reserve as representing more than 70% of global maple syrup supply. Those are figures from Amazon’s announcement, rather than independently verified estimates in the sources cited here.
How did the thieves take the syrup?
The real theft was gradual, not a dramatic raid. TIME’s 2024 account says syrup was removed from barrels over a period of months and replaced with water. TIME puts the weight of each barrel at about 620 pounds, a detail that gives a sense of the logistics involved.

The quiet, methodical approach is a sharp contrast with a fictional crime caper built around a risky scheme and a cast of colorful characters.

Which parts of The Sticky are fictional?
The series follows Ruth Landry, a maple-syrup farmer, who becomes entangled in a theft plot with Remy Bouchard and Mike Byrne. Amazon’s 2024 announcement presents them as the leads in the show’s dramatic story. The available accounts do not establish them as portraits of identified real participants, so their personalities, relationships and motives should be understood as elements of the series—not as factual biographies.
The real event provides the broad premise and setting: a major theft from Quebec’s syrup reserve. It does not make the show a documentary reconstruction of how particular people planned or carried out the crime.

What did the creators keep from the real story?
The creators have described the connection as deliberately loose. In a 2024 NPR interview, co-creator Ed Herro said: “we just took the headline, and that’s where it ends, really.” He also contrasted the real theft’s quiet, methodical character with the more heightened story told in the series.
That distinction is the key to watching The Sticky: the heist is real, but the show uses it as a launchpad for fiction rather than as a scene-by-scene account.
