What was Quentin’s plan for Tanya?
The finale frames the plot as a plan to kill Tanya so that Greg could benefit financially. Greg has left Sicily before the events aboard the yacht, while Quentin’s associates keep Tanya away from shore. The apparent motive is clear in the episode’s framing and contemporaneous coverage; the precise legal route by which Greg might receive Tanya’s money is not explained.

- Quentin gains Tanya’s trust. After Greg leaves, Quentin sympathizes with her unhappy marriage and encourages her to imagine a life beyond it. That supportive manner draws her into his company.
- He brings her to Palermo and his social circle. During the visit, Tanya sees a photograph of Quentin and Greg together when they were young. The image connects the two men and helps her suspect they are working together.
- Tanya is kept aboard the yacht. On the trip back toward Taormina, Quentin delays her return to shore. Niccolò is meant to escort her at night.
- The bag makes the threat unmistakable. Tanya searches Niccolò’s bag and finds rope, duct tape, and a pistol. She now has reason to believe she is in immediate danger.
- The plan turns into a fight. Tanya shoots Quentin and several of the men present. She then tries to get from the yacht to a smaller boat, slips, hits her head, and drowns.
Why does Tanya trust Quentin?
Quentin presents himself as a sympathetic ally when Tanya feels abandoned by Greg. Before the finale aired, actor Tom Hollander described Quentin as encouraging her to escape an “unsatisfactory marriage or unfulfilling marriage.” Hollander also called him “compassionately misleading.” Those comments describe Quentin’s apparent persona as presented to Tanya, not a confirmed account of his hidden plan. After the reveal, the same warmth looks like a way of drawing her into his circle.
Why is Quentin’s scam so elaborate?
The series does not give Quentin a complete explanation of his strategy or spell out every step of a financial arrangement. What it shows is a gradual process: he builds Tanya’s confidence, makes her feel welcomed, and gets her into a situation where she is isolated from an easy route back to shore. The photograph supplies a crucial connection to Greg; the contents of Niccolò’s bag make the immediate danger clear.

That distinction matters: the story supports the conclusion that the scheme is connected to Tanya’s money and Greg, but it does not establish the detailed terms of any prenup or precisely how an inheritance would legally work. Greg’s eventual consequences are also not resolved in the finale.
What did Mike White say about Tanya’s ending?
Creator and showrunner Mike White said Tanya’s Season 2 arc was built around her eventual death. He connected the ending to Tanya’s earlier remark about death being the last immersive experience she had not tried, and described the Italian setting and her larger-than-life persona as grounds for an “operatic conclusion.” White also said he did not want her simply to die at someone else’s hands; he wanted her to fight back first.
“I just felt like you know we’re going to Italy, she’s such a diva, larger-than-life female archetype, it just felt like we could devise our own operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and her story.”
White also said, “I just think her dying at the hands of someone else felt too tragic.” These are White’s stated creative intentions, rather than proof of every implied detail of the plot. TheWrap’s interview with White discusses the finale and his thinking behind it.

Why does Tanya die after fighting back?
Tanya’s death is accidental in the escape attempt, not the direct result of the men overpowering her. She survives the confrontation long enough to try to leave the yacht, but slips while climbing toward the smaller boat, hits her head, and drowns. That outcome delivers the fight White said he wanted for her while ending her story in the operatic, character-specific way he described.
