The Wheel of Time is a completed fantasy saga of 14 main novels and one prequel, New Spring. Robert Jordan wrote the first 11 main books; after his death, Brandon Sanderson completed the final three from Jordan’s notes and outline. For a first read, begin with The Eye of the World, then follow the main novels in publication order.

How many books are in The Wheel of Time?

The series comprises 14 main novels and one prequel, New Spring. Amazon’s series guide gives the main saga’s publication span as 1990–2013. Macmillan’s Wheel of Time catalogue lists the books, while the Amazon series guide describes the completed sequence.

What order should you read the books in?

For a first read, use publication order: start with the first main novel and read through the fourteenth, then read New Spring. The prequel is set earlier in the story’s chronology, but reading it first is not necessary to begin the saga.

  1. The Eye of the World
  2. The Great Hunt
  3. The Dragon Reborn
  4. The Shadow Rising
  5. The Fires of Heaven
  6. Lord of Chaos
  7. A Crown of Swords
  8. The Path of Daggers
  9. Winter’s Heart
  10. Crossroads of Twilight
  11. Knife of Dreams
  12. The Gathering Storm
  13. Towers of Midnight
  14. A Memory of Light
  15. New Spring (prequel)

Macmillan’s catalogue is a useful place to confirm the publisher’s listings for individual volumes and collections. Editions and formats can differ by marketplace and region.

Who finished the series after Robert Jordan?

Robert Jordan created The Wheel of Time and wrote its first 11 main novels. He died in 2007 before completing the saga. Jordan’s wife and editor, Harriet McDougal, selected Brandon Sanderson to finish it using Jordan’s notes and outline. The planned final volume contained enough story for three books: The Gathering Storm (2009), Towers of Midnight (2010), and A Memory of Light (2013). Sanderson describes the completion process in his account of working on The Wheel of Time.

Is the TV series the same as the books?

No. Amazon and Sony describe the television series as an adaptation of Jordan’s novels, not a scene-for-scene reproduction. It is a separate screen version, so its structure and events should not be assumed to match the books exactly. Sony’s title page identifies the show as based on the novels: The Wheel of Time.

GamesRadar reported that the television adaptation was canceled after its third season. That is an entertainment-news report, not a status statement on the official Amazon or Sony title pages; streaming availability can also change. Sony’s 2018 greenlight announcement described the books as having sold more than 90 million copies worldwide at that time. That is a historical figure, not a current sales total. Where should a new reader start?

Start with The Eye of the World, the first main novel. Choose an individual copy or a complete collection according to whether you want to try the opening book or acquire the saga together; check the listing’s edition, format, and completeness before buying.
