The Warriors is Walter Hill’s 1979 action-adventure drama about a New York street gang trying to reach its Coney Island home after it is blamed for the killing of a rival gang leader. Based on Sol Yurick’s novel, the film turns that journey into a night-long struggle across the city.
What is The Warriors about?
The Warriors travel from the Bronx toward Coney Island after a gathering of New York gangs ends with the death of a rival leader and the group is blamed. Their route home becomes dangerous as other gangs pursue them. Paramount’s synopsis places the action across the Bronx, Manhattan and Coney Island.

When was The Warriors released, and how long is it?
The American Film Institute (AFI) records the U.S. release date as February 9, 1979. Runtime listings differ: Paramount gives 93 minutes, while AFI lists 94 minutes. The sources do not resolve the one-minute discrepancy.
What controversy followed its release?
AFI’s catalog records reports of incidents and vandalism associated with screenings soon after the film’s nationwide release. It also notes that Paramount pulled its advertising on February 16, 1979, and offered exhibitors the option to end bookings without penalty.
