The War and Treaty are the married singer-songwriters Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, whose music draws on gospel, soul, country, rock, blues and other roots traditions. Their story brings together Michael’s search for expression after military service, Tanya’s experience as a singer, and a partnership in which shared life and music developed side by side. The title is an editorial framing of their story, not the name of a separately established album or documentary.
Who are The War and Treaty?
The War and Treaty is the musical partnership of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, who are married. Their sound is not easily contained by one genre: their label describes it through Southern soul, gospel, country and rock and roll, while the couple have also named blues, folk and bluegrass as influences. That range helps explain why their work can move between intimate relationship songs and a broader roots-music vocabulary.
The group’s official story presents their musical journey as intertwined with their shared life. That account is the duo’s own framing; it is useful context for understanding their artistic intentions, rather than an independent assessment of how listeners respond.
How service and singing shaped their path
Michael Trotter Jr.’s search for expression
The duo’s official biography describes Michael as a soldier who returned from Iraq searching for language to express what he had experienced. It is a personal account of the origins of his songwriting, not a claim that music resolves the effects of war or trauma.

Tanya Trotter’s experience as a performer
The same biography describes Tanya as an experienced singer before the couple’s musical partnership took shape. Their different paths—his search for a way to articulate difficult experience and her established performance background—became part of the story they tell about forming a life and a band together.
What love and pain mean in their music
In a 2024 Levitt Foundation interview, Tanya described the music as reflecting what the couple are feeling and the sounds they enjoy in different settings. That perspective makes their relationship more than a biographical detail: in their own account, shared experience and musical curiosity both feed the work.

Michael has described the purpose of the songs in especially direct terms: “We don’t sing for applause. We sing for the person in row twelve who came in carrying something heavy, so they can leave a little lighter.” The quotation comes from the duo’s official biography. It expresses an artistic intention, not a clinical claim or a guarantee of what any listener will feel.
Love, pain and hope are therefore best understood as themes through which the pair describe their lives and music—not as a promise that every song tells the same story or produces a particular outcome. Their influences extend beyond any single emotional register, encompassing several strands of American roots music.
