Harper, and Kami Cotler. The best-known original cast deaths are Ralph Waite, Will Geer, and Ellen Corby. Series creator and narrator Earl Hamner Jr. also died in 2016, while several important supporting performers have died as well.
This distinction matters: the entire Walton family cast has not died, and lists that name only three deceased actors leave out Hamner and numerous recurring cast members. The dates below separate the principal Walton family performers from the show’s wider supporting cast.

Which original Waltons cast members are still alive?
The eight surviving principal family performers identified in the supplied 2026 research are:
| Actor | Role | Born | Status as of August 7, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Richard Thomas | John-Boy Walton | June 13, 1951 | Alive |
| Michael Learned | Olivia Walton | April 9, 1939 | Alive |
| Judy Norton | Mary Ellen Walton | January 29, 1958 | Alive |
| Jon Walmsley | Jason Walton | February 6, 1956 | Alive |
| Mary McDonough | Erin Walton | May 4, 1961 | Alive |
| Eric Scott | Ben Walton | October 20, 1958 | Alive |
| David W. Harper | Jim-Bob Walton | October 4, 1961 | Alive |
| Kami Cotler | Elizabeth Walton | June 17, 1965 | Alive |
The original Walton children’s performers are therefore not all deceased. David W. Harper is no longer a regular presence in show business, but he has occasionally attended Walton-related reunions and memorabilia events. The survival list includes Michael Learned, who played the children’s mother, Olivia Walton, as well as the seven performers who played the Walton children.
Some online pages refer to Mary McDonough as “Mary Beth McDonough.” These names refer to the same actress, not two different Walton performers. Likewise, Mary Ellen was played by Judy Norton, not “Jody Morton.” A Hallmark Channel cast snippet has displayed the latter erroneous name, while dedicated cast listings identify Norton correctly. See the Hallmark Channel overview of The Waltons and the cast birthday listing.
Which principal Waltons actors have died?
Three major on-screen members of the Walton household have died:
| Actor | Role | Date of death | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ralph Waite | John Walton Sr. | February 13, 2014 | 85 |
| Will Geer | Zebulon “Grandpa” Walton | April 22, 1978 | 76 |
| Ellen Corby | Esther “Grandma” Walton | April 14, 1999 | 87 |
Will Geer’s death became part of the story
Will Geer died while the series was still running. His death was written into the program: Grandpa Walton’s death became part of the opening episode of Season 7. This is why viewers may remember a major change in the Walton household rather than a simple off-screen recasting. The Waltons ultimately ran for nine seasons, from 1972 through 1981; see the series reference for its broadcast and production history.

Earl Hamner Jr.: creator and narrator, not a Walton family actor
Earl Hamner Jr. died on March 24, 2016, aged 92. He should be included in a complete account of the show’s major original contributors, but he was not one of the on-screen Walton family actors. Hamner created the series and supplied its narration, drawing on his 1961 novel Spencer’s Mountain and his Virginia upbringing.

Saying that only Ralph Waite, Will Geer, and Ellen Corby died omits Hamner, while counting Hamner as one of the actors who played a Walton confuses the show’s creator-narrator with its screen cast. The Hallmark Channel’s series overview identifies the principal cast and the program’s creative background.
Notable recurring and supporting cast members who have died
The Walton family was surrounded by a large ensemble of neighbors, clergy, law-enforcement officials, and family friends. The following notable performers are listed in the available memorial research:

These names are not a complete list of every performer connected with the series who has died. The All About the Waltons memorial page explicitly says its list is non-exhaustive and was current only through April 2016. It should therefore be treated as a useful memorial reference, not as a complete, continuously updated death database.
A note about Mariclare Costello
Mariclare Costello is an example of why older cast lists need to be checked against later biographical information. Older Walton-related pages list her with a birth date but do not provide a death date. A later biographical listing records her death as April 17, 2026. Because the available sources differ in age and purpose, that date should be attributed to the later biographical record rather than silently presented as though every older cast database agrees.

Why internet lists about the cast can be misleading
Search results often combine several different questions: Which Walton family actors are alive? Which original cast members have died? Which recurring performers have died? And which people involved in creating the series are still living? The answers are not identical.
A list limited to the Walton children and their parents produces the eight-person living group and the three major household deaths. A broader list must also account for supporting actors and Earl Hamner Jr. A complete production history would go further still, but the available memorial source does not claim to document every cast death. Keeping those categories separate prevents the false claim that the whole original family cast has died.
