Spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol season 2, episode 4. Daryl and Carol’s reunion was rewritten so she would appear unexpectedly during the attack on the Nest, when Daryl was alone and at his lowest. Norman Reedus said the creative team reshaped the moment to make it more surprising and climactic.
Which episode brings Daryl and Carol together?
They reunite in “La Paradis Pour Toi,” season 2, episode 4 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. The encounter takes place during an attack on the Nest in Normandy, where Daryl has become caught up in the danger and Carol has been tracking him. The episode brings them together after their separation following the original series finale’s lakeside farewell.
What changed in the reunion scene?
Reedus said the team revised the scene’s setup and timing so Daryl would run into Carol out of nowhere, rather than encounter her in a less climactic context. He described the process as collaborative: “We rewrote that. We all got together and we talked about it and we changed that a little bit to make it so that it’s an elevated reunion, that it happens out of nowhere.”
The change is best understood as a rewrite of the dramatic placement and staging. The interviews do not specify what an earlier script draft contained, nor do they establish that a different version was filmed.

Why did the team want Daryl at his lowest?
In the scene’s final setup, Daryl is alone and believes his attempt to protect Laurent and the people around him has failed. Reedus said the reunion needed to arrive at that vulnerable point: “It had to be him at his lowest point, and it had to be the one person that he needed to see, that is an impossible situation.”
That timing makes Carol’s arrival more than a surprise entrance. As Reedus explained it, she appears when Daryl most needs her, amid a situation he cannot resolve on his own. TheWrap’s October 21, 2024 interview likewise reported Reedus saying the team kept working on the scene until it felt right.

How does it echo their Terminus reunion?
Melissa McBride recognized a visual callback to the pair’s reunion at Terminus in the original series: “It does mirror that Terminus reunion in that they stop in their tracks, and they’re just looking at each other.” In both moments, recognition briefly stills them before they move toward one another.
The resemblance does not make the France reunion a repeat. Reedus emphasized that Daryl is alone this time, and that Carol reaches him at a moment of particular need. The surrounding danger and Daryl’s isolation give the familiar pause a different emotional weight.

What the actors have said about the long separation
ComicBook.com described the reunion as coming nearly two years after their last parting and spanning two continents. That is the outlet’s description of the story’s separation, not a precise calculation of the characters’ in-world timeline. AMC’s October 7, 2024 interview characterized Carol’s season-two journey as a mission to find Daryl, unfolding alongside his own storyline in France.
The reunion was also not the first scene Reedus and McBride filmed together for the spinoff: TheWrap noted they had already filmed a walk-and-talk. It was, however, the first major scene of the pair together shown to audiences in the series.
