New Zealand singer Ella Monnery’s first run on The Voice Australia ended not with a performance elimination, but with COVID-era border restrictions that kept her from returning to Australia for the playoffs. She auditioned again in 2021, hoping to finish what she had started; that season, her journey ended in the semi-final.
How Monnery’s 2020 run was interrupted
Monnery auditioned for The Voice Australia in 2020 and joined Kelly Rowland’s team. She advanced through the battle rounds, then returned to New Zealand during a break before the playoffs.

As COVID-19 restrictions and closed borders disrupted travel between the countries, Monnery could not get back to Australia to continue in the competition. PerthNow and TV Week reported that production tried to find a way to bring her back, but ultimately told her it could not.
Monnery described the sudden stop to PerthNow: “I had just done this amazing thing, had this amazing experience, and then all of a sudden it stopped and I was stuck here (in New Zealand). That’s when panic set in,”

She later recalled crying in her car while eating chicken nuggets. That detail comes from her reported account of the experience; the reports describe a travel-related interruption, not an on-stage elimination.
Why she auditioned again in 2021
Monnery returned to audition for the next season, framing the decision as a chance to complete what the previous year’s interruption had left unfinished. “Last year, I was seeing how I went as the girl from New Zealand, but this year, I’m the girl with unfinished business who’s going to fight for what she wants,” she told TV Week.

She also told PerthNow that she packed her belongings, put everything in storage and came back to finish what she had started. The prospect felt especially nerve-racking, she said: “Whoever said it would be easier the second time is lying,”
Where her second attempt ended
Monnery made it to the 2021 semi-final. Coach Jessica Mauboy chose Mick Harrington for the finale, ending Monnery’s competition run. In the account reported by WHO, Monnery said she had finally been eliminated after a year and a half, and described feeling fulfilled by returning to complete the experience.

What the reports establish—and what they don’t
The reporting documents Monnery’s two seasons on the Australian competition: her 2020 progress to the battles, the border-related interruption, and her return and semi-final elimination in 2021. These accounts are from 2021; they do not establish what she is doing professionally today or provide current details about The Voice Australia.
