Whoopi Goldberg reportedly used “complicit” to describe people who, in her view, saw women being harmed and failed to speak up—not to make a legal finding about everyone named in Jeffrey Epstein-related documents. In a February 4, 2026 report, Entertainment Weekly, syndicated by AOL, said Goldberg made the remark during a discussion on The View about Epstein-file releases and claims that powerful people protected one another.
What did Whoopi Goldberg say on The View?
Entertainment Weekly, in a report syndicated by AOL on February 4, 2026, quoted Goldberg as saying: “Not only did they protect each other, but we were complicit in all of this. We are complicit.” The report placed the comment in a conversation about people protecting one another amid the release of Epstein-related files.
The quotation is reproduced in secondary reporting; an official ABC transcript or episode recording was not verified. It should therefore be attributed to the report rather than presented as a checked transcript.
What did Goldberg mean by “complicit”?
A February 18, 2026 report by Hindustan Times says Goldberg later explained the remark as a criticism of women who saw what was happening but did not intervene or speak up for other women. It quoted her saying: “Women didn’t say, ‘Hey, don’t do that. Don’t stand up for that.’ Women did not stand up for other women. Women saw what was going on and didn’t say, ‘Stop this.’ They didn’t come out and say this was going on.”

In this account, “complicit” is Goldberg’s broad moral and rhetorical description of silence and failure to intervene. It is not a legal conclusion that every woman, or every person who knew Epstein, committed a crime or knowingly helped him.
Does appearing in Epstein-related files prove wrongdoing?
No. A person’s name appearing in a document does not by itself show that the person committed a crime, participated in abuse, or was complicit. Context matters: a name might appear in a news article, an email written by someone else, or a record of a contact. Hindustan Times quoted cohost Sara Haines making that distinction: “Wealthy, famous people often cross in professional and social circles, so that’s not the surprising part.” The presence of a name is not evidence of wrongdoing without supporting information.

Why was Goldberg’s own name discussed later?
The February 18 Hindustan Times report says Goldberg read a May 2013 email that mentioned a possible plane trip to Monaco for a charity event. According to the report, Epstein declined the proposed arrangement, replying, “No thanks.” Goldberg said she did not take the plane and denied being Epstein’s girlfriend or friend.
This later exchange concerned Goldberg’s name appearing in an email. It does not establish that her earlier “complicit” comment was about her own conduct; the earlier report describes that comment as part of a broader discussion about people protecting one another and failing to speak up.
