Spoilers for The Vanished (2020). Taylor did not disappear during the camping trip: she had drowned six years earlier. Paul and Wendy’s search is shaped by a shared fantasy that their daughter is still alive. A photograph exposes the timeline problem, and Paul’s brother confirms what happened to her.
What happened to Taylor?
Taylor died in a drowning six years before the events the film presents as her disappearance. She is not abducted from the campsite. Paul and Wendy behave as if she is there because they have continued to imagine their daughter alive.

That revelation changes the meaning of the couple’s search. Their pursuit of explanations for Taylor’s supposed disappearance leads them to hurt other people, while the investigation gradually uncovers the truth behind their actions.
How does the film reveal the truth?
The photograph makes Taylor’s age impossible
Sheriff Baker notices a photograph of Paul and Wendy in front of the Twin Towers. Wendy is pregnant in the picture, which was taken before the September 11 attacks. That timing cannot fit the couple’s claim that Taylor is ten years old.

Paul’s brother confirms Taylor’s death
Paul’s brother tells authorities that Taylor died six years earlier in a drowning. This confirms that the camping-trip disappearance was not a real abduction: the parents’ account belongs to the fantasy they have maintained.
DNA connects Paul to the campsite violence
Hair found in a victim’s hand contains DNA belonging to Paul, tying him to the violence surrounding the campsite. The evidence is part of the investigation that dismantles the couple’s version of events.

Who took Taylor?
No one took Taylor from the campsite. She had died years earlier, so the question of who abducted her has no answer within the film’s actual timeline. The apparent disappearance is how Paul and Wendy experience and describe their imagined life with her.
What does the ending mean?
Paul and Wendy leave the campsite without any sign of lasting acceptance of Taylor’s death. In the final images, old footage of Taylor plays on the RV screen. The image suggests that the couple has returned to reliving memories of her and that their fantasy continues. The film presents this through the closing scene rather than through an explicit explanation from its filmmakers.

No. Distractify describes The Vanished as fiction and says it is not based on a true story. Taylor and the events surrounding her disappearance are fictional, not a real missing-child case. Distractify’s explanation.
