Rob Sheffield’s “The Untamed Heart of Liam Payne” is a memorial essay, not a documentary or neutral biography. Published in Rolling Stone on October 18, 2024, it remembers Payne through his bond with One Direction and its fans, returning to one defining scene: Payne performing “History” at his first headlining solo show in June 2018.

Why Sheffield begins with “History”

Sheffield builds the essay around “History,” a One Direction song that gives him a way to consider what the group and its audience meant to Payne. At the first night of Payne’s headlining solo show at New York’s Beacon Theatre in June 2018, he performed the song and the audience joined in. Sheffield presents that shared singing as the essay’s emotional center: a moment when a solo performer and a crowd still connected through the band’s past.

The scene also shapes the piece’s idea of Payne’s legacy. Rather than treating the solo career as a clean break from One Direction, Sheffield frames it as a complicated continuation of a relationship with the group and with fans who had grown up alongside it.

Payne’s place in One Direction

The essay traces the group’s beginnings to the U.K. edition of The X Factor, where its members were brought together. One Direction did not win the competition, but went on to release albums including Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015).

Sheffield highlights Payne not only as a performer but as a co-writer. The songs he names include “Diana,” “Little Black Dress,” “Fool’s Gold,” “Steal My Girl,” “Clouds” and “History.” The list ties Payne’s creative contribution to the same catalogue that the essay presents as a lasting bond between the band and its listeners.

The transition to a solo career

After One Direction’s hiatus, Payne pursued a solo career. Sheffield identifies LP1 as his solo debut album and “Teardrops” as a single released in March 2024. He describes the shift away from the group as difficult and complicated, rather than as a straightforward account of reinvention or success.

To convey that uncertainty, the essay recalls Payne’s 2022 interview with Logan Paul, in which Payne said, “I still don’t know who I am. I replicate different people on a daily basis.” Sheffield uses the remark as part of his portrait of a person still searching for a settled identity; it is Payne’s own reflection, not an independent diagnosis.

What the essay is—and is not

“The Untamed Heart of Liam Payne” is a personal tribute shaped by Sheffield’s judgments about Payne’s work, career and struggles. It is useful as a remembrance of Payne’s relationship to One Direction and its fans, but it should not be read as a comprehensive biography, documentary account or neutral career assessment.

The essay closes by returning to the warmth Sheffield finds in the 2018 performance. His final reflection is: “That’s Liam Payne as the world will remember him, and that’s the Liam Payne we’re all mourning today.”
