The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is a scripted drama inspired by Amanda Knox’s story—not a documentary or a court record. The legal record is clear on the central outcome: Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were definitively acquitted of British student Meredith Kercher’s 2007 murder in 2015, while Rudy Guede was convicted. A separate malicious-accusation case against Knox had its own legal history and did not reverse that murder acquittal.

Is The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox based on a true story?

Yes, in the sense that the 2025 limited series is inspired by real events in Knox’s life and the legal case surrounding Kercher’s murder. Hulu’s official series page describes the program’s premise, and Disney’s launch announcement frames it around Knox’s imprisonment and fight for freedom. That is the series’ dramatic framing, not a complete account of the court record.

It is a scripted drama, not a documentary. Dialogue, scenes, private thoughts and character motivations presented onscreen should be treated as dramatization unless independently supported by reliable reporting or court documents. The official descriptions establish the series’ premise, but do not establish that every scene reproduces events exactly. Hulu’s official series page and Disney’s launch announcement identify it as a limited series and describe its framing.

What happened to Meredith Kercher, and what did the courts decide?

Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old British student, was murdered in Perugia, Italy, in 2007. The final outcomes for the people most often discussed in accounts of the case are not interchangeable:

  • Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito: Italy’s highest court definitively acquitted them of Kercher’s murder in 2015.
  • Rudy Guede: He was convicted of Kercher’s murder.

These are the outcomes to keep in view when evaluating a dramatization or a retelling that focuses on earlier allegations or decisions. The Associated Press’s January 2025 account summarizes the distinction between the murder acquittal and Knox’s separate conviction: Associated Press, January 23, 2025.

Why is there a separate case involving Patrick Lumumba?

A different proceeding concerned Knox’s accusation against Patrick Lumumba, who was not the subject of the murder acquittal. Knox was convicted of maliciously accusing him. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) considered the fairness of proceedings connected to that conviction, including Knox’s access to a lawyer during police questioning. The ECHR’s January 24, 2019 judgment was not a decision about whether Knox or Sollecito murdered Kercher.

The court said: “The Court took the view that the Italian Government had not succeeded in showing that the restriction of Ms Knox’s access to a lawyer, at the police interview of 6 November 2007 at 5.45 a.m. – when there was a criminal charge against her – had not irreparably undermined the fairness of the proceedings as a whole.” The judgment addressed the malicious-accusation proceedings and the fairness issue; it did not undo the separate murder acquittal. In January 2025, Italy’s highest court upheld Knox’s malicious-accusation conviction, according to the Associated Press report linked above. Read the ECHR judgment in Knox v. Italy for the court’s account.

When did the series premiere, and where can you watch it?

The limited series premiered on August 20, 2025. Disney’s June 5, 2025 announcement said it would launch with two episodes, followed by one new episode weekly. That announcement named Hulu as the U.S. service and Disney+ as the service in the UK, Ireland and international markets. Streaming catalogs can change and vary by territory, so check the local Hulu or Disney+ listing for current availability. The title is also listed as a 2025, one-season series on Disney+.

How should viewers separate the drama from the legal record?

Use the series as a dramatized account of a real story, then check what kind of source supports any specific claim. An official synopsis explains what the program says it is about; a court judgment records a legal decision and its scope; reporting can summarize later developments. The key distinction in this case is between the murder proceeding, which ended with Knox and Sollecito’s definitive acquittals, and the separate malicious-accusation proceeding involving Lumumba.
