What the available record does not establish is that Ross and Jackson were secret lovers, maintained a conventional adult dating relationship, lived together romantically, or had sex. It still does not answer a different question: whether Ross reciprocated those feelings or whether the pair entered a sexual relationship. Jackson’s admission establishes his own crush. It does not establish Ross’s private response.

The age and power dynamics are essential context
Ross was born in 1944 and Jackson in 1958, a difference of roughly 14 years. When Ross presented the Jackson 5 during the group’s 1969 launch, Jackson was about 11 and Ross was about 25. She was already an established adult star; he was a child performer entering a highly controlled entertainment system.
That context makes it irresponsible to describe the relationship as an adult romance beginning during Jackson’s childhood. Jackson could have experienced an intense crush or idealization without the relationship becoming a mutual romantic partnership. Ross’s seniority as a celebrity and her association with the group’s professional breakthrough also gave the bond a mentorship dimension.

The 2002 will shows trust, not proof of romance
Jackson’s 2002 will named his mother, Katherine Jackson, as guardian of his minor children. It named Diana Ross as successor guardian if Katherine could not serve. The provision became widely discussed after Jackson’s death in 2009, when the will became public.
This is meaningful evidence that Jackson trusted Ross and considered her an important person in his family’s life. It is stronger evidence of enduring personal confidence than a song title or a fan theory. But a contingent guardianship nomination is not proof of romance. Ross was not Jackson’s legal guardian during his lifetime or after his death under this provision; she was the backup named behind Katherine Jackson, and the arrangement depended on Katherine being unable or unwilling to serve.
Do the songs prove that Ross and Jackson had an affair?
Remember the Time
Jackson’s 1992 single Remember the Time carried a dedication to Diana Ross, according to contemporary and archival music references. The dedication confirms continued affection or regard and fits the long-running importance of Ross in Jackson’s life.
It does not prove that the lyrics recount a literal affair with Ross. A dedication can express gratitude, admiration, friendship, artistic association, or personal affection. Unless the songwriter explicitly identifies a song as a factual account, lyrics are too ambiguous to establish a private relationship.
Dirty Diana
Fans often connect Dirty Diana to Diana Ross because of the name in the title and Jackson’s association with more than one famous Diana. The title alone is not evidence that the song referred to Ross.
