Elon Musk really does appear as himself in Iron Man 2. The brief encounter with Tony Stark in the Monaco race sequence, however, is scripted: Stark is fictional, and the film’s talk of an electric jet and SpaceX Merlin engines is dialogue, not evidence of a real meeting or project.

Favreau described the race-day ambush as an early idea for the film: “The idea of ambushing Tony at race day at Monaco is an image I had very early.” In a contemporaneous interview, he also discussed the filmmakers’ interest in the Monaco Historic Grand Prix setting, scouting the course, capturing plates, and recreating part of the track for the action. Vanity Fair’s 2010 interview with Favreau provides that production context.
What Musk and Tony Stark say in the scene
The scene presents Musk meeting Stark and Pepper Potts and discussing an electric-jet idea; Stark also compliments SpaceX Merlin engines. Those details belong to the movie’s fictional exchange. Tony Stark is not a real person, and the dialogue does not establish that Musk and a real-world counterpart had this conversation or that the electric-jet project existed. Le Monde’s 2025 account describes the encounter as imagined and staged for the film.

Did Elon Musk inspire Tony Stark?
The cameo and the character’s origins are separate questions. A published excerpt from Elon Musk: A Mission to Save the World reports that Robert Downey Jr. visited SpaceX in 2007 while preparing to play Stark, and notes Musk’s cameo. That is relevant background about Downey’s preparation, but it does not prove that Stark is a direct portrayal of Musk. The book excerpt supports the reported visit and cameo, not a claim that the fictional character is simply Musk on screen.
