Melissa Rauch has said she based Bernadette’s distinctive voice on her mother: a high-pitched voice with a New Jersey accent that Rauch grew up imitating. Rauch also chose to pitch her voice up for her audition, according to a 2026 report—but she recalled that it was less exaggerated then than it became in the finished performance.
Why does Bernadette have a high-pitched voice?
Rauch directly linked the character’s voice to her mother in a TV Insider interview. Asked how she came up with Bernadette’s unusual way of speaking, she said: “My mother sounds very similar to Bernadette. She’s got a very high-pitched voice except with a New Jersey accent, and I grew up imitating her.”

That is Rauch’s explanation of the inspiration: the high pitch and New Jersey accent came together in the voice she associated with her mother, whose manner of speaking Rauch said she had imitated while growing up. Her wording describes the resemblance; it does not establish anything more specific about her mother’s dialect or background.
Did Melissa Rauch use that voice at her audition?
Yes, though the audition version was reportedly less pronounced than the voice viewers came to know. A June 16, 2026 CinemaBlend report recounting Rauch’s conversation on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast says she spoke with her mother before the audition, rehearsed the material both with her voice pitched up and without, and chose the higher version. The report quotes Rauch recalling that it “wasn’t as pitched up as it eventually became.”
#1 Best Overall
This account adds context to the direct interview: the voice began as a deliberate performance choice inspired by Rauch’s mother, and Rauch later developed it further. The podcast’s June 8, 2026 episode listing, “The Bernadette Effect,” confirms that Rauch discussed how the voice took shape, but the listing itself provides a summary rather than a transcript. The audition details here are therefore attributed to CinemaBlend’s report.

Some viewers have wondered whether Bernadette sounded different in the final season; one example is a question posted on Reddit’s r/bigbangtheory. That is an individual viewer’s impression, not evidence of a documented season-by-season change. The sources above explain the voice’s inspiration and its development from audition to later performance, but they do not establish when or whether it changed between seasons.

They also do not substantiate claims that producers asked Rauch to alter the voice or that it was digitally modified. Rauch’s own explanation—that she drew on her mother’s voice and imitation—remains the clearest account available here.
