Adam Sandler and Chris Farley were friends as well as colleagues on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Sandler’s 2019 musical tribute—and his later account of rehearsing it—offers a personal glimpse of their time together, including after-show gatherings and the pain of remembering Farley. It is a meaningful recollection, not a complete account of their friendship.

Were Adam Sandler and Chris Farley friends?

Yes. Sandler has spoken about Farley as a close friend from their years at Saturday Night Live, not simply as a fellow cast member. In a 2020 interview with 60 Minutes, he recalled Farley’s place near his own at the show and remembered the time they spent together. Sandler also called Farley the funniest among their group, adding, “well he is the funniest, now who is next?” Sandler’s 2020 interview with 60 Minutes is the clearest source here for his own retrospective memories.

How did Sandler and Farley know each other?

They worked together on Saturday Night Live during the 1990s, when both became prominent performers on the program. Sandler remembered Farley’s desk being near his and described them as part of the same generation at the show. Their shared workplace is the documented setting for the friendship; the available accounts do not establish a more precise story of how or when they first met.

What did Sandler’s tribute to Farley recall?

When Sandler hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time on May 4, 2019, he closed the episode with a song about Farley. The performance drew on affectionate memories and grief: after-show gatherings, Farley’s family, a final “big hang” at Tim Meadows’ wedding party, and Sandler and friends traveling to Madison after Farley’s death. CBS News’ contemporaneous recap reports those details and quotes the tribute. CBS News’ report on the May 2019 tribute provides the account of what the song included.

Farley died in 1997 at age 33. The song’s recollections make the relationship vivid, but they are Sandler’s perspective and should not be treated as a full biography of Farley or a complete record of their friendship.

Why was rehearsing the song so emotional for Sandler?

In the 2020 60 Minutes interview, Sandler said rehearsing the tribute at SNL brought him back to the place where he had spent time with Farley: “I kept getting choked up, I think it was just being at SNL and being at the place that I hung with the man.” The emotion, as Sandler described it, came from the memories attached to the setting as well as from the loss itself.

Did Sandler and Farley leave SNL together?

Both left the show in 1995. CBS News reported Sandler’s 2014 description of the circumstances: “We kind of quit at the same time as being fired.” That wording is Sandler’s characterization, so it is more accurate to say that they left in the same period than to present the phrase as a formal account of how their departures were handled. CBS News’ 2019 report recounts the departure and quotes Sandler’s earlier remark.

What the public record can—and cannot—show

Sandler’s interview and tribute support a grounded conclusion: the two shared years at SNL, spent time together outside the show, and mattered to one another as friends. Those public recollections offer personal evidence, not an exhaustive account of their private lives. The Television Academy’s Robert Smigel interview index identifies a segment about Sandler’s tribute and the bonding experience among SNL staff, but its index description is not a transcript of Smigel’s remarks.
