What is the Queen Mary today?
The RMS Queen Mary is a historic ocean liner moored in Long Beach, California, and operated as a visitor attraction. Its official website promotes historical and paranormal tours, hotel stays and dining; check the official Queen Mary site for current offerings and schedules. The ship’s history is part of the setting for its ghost stories, but a paranormal tour or attraction is not evidence that those stories are true.
What happened to John Pedder?
On July 10, 1966, during an emergency drill, 18-year-old laborer John Pedder was caught by a closing watertight door and killed. The Los Angeles Times reported in 1988 that ship archivist Bill Winberg described the accident. Winberg said of Pedder’s attempt to get through the door: “He tried to squeeze through, but he didn’t make it.”
That fatal accident is a documented event; it is not evidence of supernatural activity. The same newspaper report recounts later claims that a figure appeared near the door. Those are alleged sightings, not independently established proof of a ghost. The reporter also noted difficulty finding a direct witness, an important distinction when weighing a story repeated over time.

Is Room B-340’s murder story true?
Room B-340 is associated with stories of a murder and unexplained experiences. A Queen Mary museum article recounts the room’s claims, while a secondary overview of the ship says there is no historical record supporting the alleged onboard murders. The accounts available here do not establish that a murder took place in the room. It is more accurate to call this a legend than a confirmed episode in the ship’s history.
How do the other ghost stories compare with the documented history?
Stories also attach paranormal activity to the swimming pool, Shaft Alley and the engine room. An older personal account repeats several of these tales while expressing skepticism. Such retellings help explain how the ship’s reputation circulates, but they do not verify the events described.

The most careful account separates a documented 1966 death from claims that a ghost later appeared, and distinguishes both from the unsubstantiated Room B-340 murder legend. The Queen Mary is undeniably associated with ghost stories and offers paranormal-themed tours, but the available historical and journalistic accounts do not prove that the ship is haunted.
