The True Story Behind Werner Herzog’s *Fitzcarraldo* Production

Herzog’s *Fitzcarraldo* production made its most audacious image real: a full-size steamship hauled over a hill. Here’s what the surviving accounts say about the shoot, its setbacks and local participation.

Werner Herzog’s *Fitzcarraldo* (1982) made its central image real: a full-size steamship was hauled over a hill in the Peruvian rainforest. The shoot was also disrupted by a border war, relocation, money trouble, bad weather and other setbacks. But the making-of story comes through different kinds of accounts—notably Les Blank’s contemporaneous documentary *Burden of Dreams* and Herzog’s later journal-based book *Conquest of the Useless*—so the details deserve attribution, not legend-making.

Did Herzog really move a ship over a mountain?

Yes. The film’s fictional Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald dreams of bringing opera to the rainforest and moves a steamboat across a mountain as part of that ambition. Herzog’s production recreated the feat with a real vessel rather than a miniature or special effect. Janus Films describes hundreds of Indigenous Peruvians pulling a full-size, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain. In a later 60 Minutes interview transcript, Herzog says he insisted on buying and moving a 340-ton ship. Those accounts give different weights, so the figure depends on the source.

Herzog explained his rejection of a model-boat alternative in the transcript: “No, we are not speaking the same language.” The choice made the production’s defining image physically real, but it reflects Herzog’s filmmaking decision—not proof that a miniature or another approach was impossible. The same interview records his broader reflection: “We are challenging nature itself and it hits back, it just hits back that’s all and that’s grandiose about it and we have to accept that it is much stronger than we are.”

What happened behind the scenes of Fitzcarraldo?

The shoot was interrupted and relocated

The 60 Minutes transcript says Herzog began working on the film in 1979 and describes the production as taking three grueling years. It reports that a border war forced the crew to move a thousand miles, alongside money problems, plane crashes, conflict between local Indigenous groups, rain and mud. Janus Films, meanwhile, says Herzog pursued the film for nearly five years. These durations describe differently framed claims; they should not be collapsed into one precise timeline.

The Directors Guild of America’s review of Conquest of the Useless describes Herzog’s diary accounts of rising and falling rivers, damaged sets, injuries, heat and damp, and equipment troubles. Those details come through Herzog’s retrospective account, not independent incident reporting.

An earlier version was abandoned

The DGA review says that a version made a year before the completed film was abandoned. Jason Robards was cast in the title role, with Mick Jagger and Mario Adorf among the cast. The account is the DGA’s description of Herzog’s book, which offers a later, journal-based perspective on the production and its first attempt.

What role did local communities play?

In his first-person account, Herzog says the Machiguenga people made up most of the extras and gave permission for filming on their land. He writes that community members sought payment, training for a local doctor, a boat to carry crops to market, and support in securing legal title to territory between the Camisea and Urubamba rivers. Herzog says he hired a surveyor and advocated for land title with Peru’s president.

These details matter, but they are Herzog’s account. They do not independently establish the conditions of work, the full terms of consent, or how community members themselves assessed the production. The available account should not be treated as a complete community perspective or an independent audit.

What do Burden of Dreams and Conquest of the Useless reveal?

They are complementary records, not interchangeable proof. Blank’s Burden of Dreams is the contemporaneous documentary record of the unfolding production. Herzog’s Conquest of the Useless is a later book based on the journals he kept under pressure; the DGA review says it covers both the abandoned first attempt and the later production.
