We Were the Lucky Ones is rooted in the real history of Georgia Hunter’s Polish Jewish family, the Kurcs, whose members were separated during World War II and struggled to survive and reunite. The novel is historical fiction, not a documentary: Hunter says its major family events happened, while researched, plausible invention fills gaps in the record.
Who were the Kurcs?
The Kurcs were a Polish Jewish family from Radom, Poland. The novel begins in 1939 and follows three generations as war scatters relatives along different routes toward safety and reunion. Hulu describes its limited series as inspired by the true story of a Jewish family separated at the start of World War II and determined to survive and reunite.
Georgia Hunter is a descendant of the family. She says she first heard about her relatives’ Holocaust-survivor history as a teenager, then returned to it after a family reunion and began investigating their experiences. In a 2024 TIME report, Hunter’s grandfather is identified as Addy Kurc.
How much of the novel is true?
Hunter has said that “Every significant movement, incarceration, brush with death, and escape described in the book actually happened.” That describes the broad family milestones, not every conversation or domestic detail. She also explains that she used creative license where the record left gaps, adding plausible connective details to make the story readable as a novel.

In a Penguin Random House interview published May 28, 2021, Hunter put it this way: “The story that unfolds in We Were the Lucky Ones is based on true events.” She says key milestones came from oral histories, primary sources, and other research, while some gaps required creative license. The best distinction is therefore: the family history and major events are real; the novel’s scenes may include researched, plausible reconstruction.
What evidence did Hunter use?
Hunter drew on relatives’ memories and interviews, family photographs and letters, survivor testimony in the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive, museum research, and archival and government records. She has described finding a handwritten account by her great-uncle Genek at the Hoover Institution, as well as military records for Genek and Selim through the U.K. Ministry of Defense.

Those sources helped her build a chronology of what happened to family members. They do not establish that every line of dialogue or every private moment in the novel was recorded verbatim; those are among the details a historical novelist may reconstruct when the evidence is incomplete.
What does the family archive show?
TIME reported on March 28, 2024, that the Kurc family donated an archive to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The reported materials included family photographs, false identification papers, and Addy’s snakeskin wallet, which held documents connected to attempts to leave France and find a safer destination.

These objects are tangible evidence of the family’s history and efforts to escape danger. They support the broader account of displacement and survival, but they are not proof that every scene in either the book or the television series happened exactly as shown.
How does Hulu’s series relate to the real story?
Hulu presents We Were the Lucky Ones as a limited series based on Hunter’s novel and inspired by the Kurc family’s true story. Its official credits name Erica Lipez as writer and showrunner and 20th Television as producer. TIME reported that the adaptation has eight episodes and that the production could draw on Hunter’s decade of family research and photographs.

The series is a dramatized screen adaptation, not a documentary record. It translates a researched family history and a historical novel into television, so viewers should not assume that each scene reproduces a separately verified event.
