Yes. Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour is based on a real 1978 appearance by serial killer Rodney Alcala on the matchmaking show The Dating Game. Contestant Cheryl Bradshaw chose him as the winning bachelor. The central encounter happened, but the film dramatizes the events around it: its audience member who recognizes Alcala is fictionalized, and some dialogue was reshaped. Alcala was convicted of seven murders; larger victim totals remain estimates, not established counts.

What happened on The Dating Game?

In 1978, Rodney Alcala appeared as bachelor number three on The Dating Game, opposite bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. Bradshaw selected him as the winner. Netflix’s film coverage and its 2023 announcement identify the appearance and her choice as the real event at the center of Woman of the Hour (Netflix Tudum; About Netflix).

The disturbing contrast is that Alcala was not simply an unsettling television contestant: he was a serial killer. Netflix reports that he had killed at least three women before the show and at least two afterward. He was ultimately convicted of seven murders in two states (Netflix Tudum).

Which parts are fact and which are fiction?

The real appearance and Bradshaw’s selection of Alcala are the historical foundation. The film builds a dramatic story around that event, moving between periods and depicting crimes and encounters before and after the broadcast. Those scenes are the movie’s chronology, not a complete case record.

The audience member who raises an alarm

The film’s Laura, an audience member who recognizes Alcala and tries to warn others, is fictionalized. Netflix describes her as a stand-in for people whose warnings were ignored; the character should not be mistaken for a documented person at the taping or proof that this exact warning occurred (Netflix Tudum).

Dialogue and characterization

Some dialogue was deliberately fictionalized to make Alcala’s behavior legible to contemporary viewers, according to Netflix’s account of the filmmakers’ choices. Director and star Anna Kendrick put the emphasis this way: “I’m not really interested in the real Rodney.” Screenwriter Ian McDonald said, “The context around him was the thing that I found really interesting.” Their comments describe the film’s approach, not evidence that its scenes reproduce a transcript or exact historical conversations (Netflix Tudum).

How many people did Rodney Alcala kill?

The firm figure to distinguish from estimates is seven murders: Alcala was convicted of seven killings in two states. Reports of much higher totals are estimates, not additional convictions or a confirmed victim count. TIME says he may have committed over 100 murders, while Netflix’s explainer notes estimates as high as 130. Neither figure should be presented as an established total (TIME; Netflix Tudum).

What happened to Alcala after the show?

Alcala was later convicted of seven murders and died on death row in 2021, according to the Associated Press. The later outcome makes clear why the broadcast is remembered, but it does not turn every element of the film’s imagined warning subplot into a documented event (Associated Press).

Why the film is a dramatization, not a documentary

Woman of the Hour uses one documented television appearance to examine the people and circumstances around it. Its core premise is true, but its fictionalized audience character, adapted dialogue, and compressed dramatic structure mean it should be described as based on a true story rather than as a literal reconstruction. For a focused account of the film’s factual departures, see the Los Angeles Times’ fact-versus-fiction guide.
