Rob Peace is based on The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, a biography by Jeff Hobbs, Peace’s Yale roommate. Its subject is not simply a student who left a difficult home behind: Peace’s education and life at Yale existed alongside enduring ties to family, friends and his New Jersey community. The sources confirm that he was killed, but do not establish a detailed account of the killing or its legal outcome.

Who was Robert Peace?

Robert Peace was a New Jersey student who attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark and later Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics, according to the Associated Press. His story connected two settings often treated as opposites: the university and the community where he grew up. His education did not sever his relationships with home, family and friends.

The AP reports that after graduating, Peace taught at his former prep school, traveled, considered graduate school and made money selling marijuana. Those details sketch some of the paths he pursued after Yale; they are not a complete account of his life or a sufficient explanation of his death.

Peace grew up in Orange, New Jersey—not East Orange. The Associated Press explicitly corrected its earlier identification of his hometown.

What happened to Rob Peace?

The publisher and Hobbs describe Peace’s death as violent, and the AP reports that he was killed nine years after graduating from Yale. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed account of the killing, identify perpetrators or explain a legal outcome. It would therefore be misleading to present a specific reconstruction of the crime or to suggest that Peace’s community ties or marijuana sales alone explain his death.

How Jeff Hobbs’s biography tells the story

Hobbs knew Peace as his Yale roommate and wrote The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, published by Scribner on September 23, 2014. The publisher describes the 416-page book as a biography and says it was adapted into the film Rob Peace. Its account follows a life shaped by relationships and by different social worlds, rather than reducing Peace to a single label or a simple story of escape.

Hobbs’s friendship with his subject is part of the book’s vantage point: he knew Peace at Yale, while the biography also concerns the family and home community that remained part of Peace’s life. That relationship gives the book a personal perspective, but it does not make the author an all-knowing narrator of every part of Peace’s experience. Readers interested in more than a feature film’s scope can look to Hobbs’s biography, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace (hardcover ISBN 9781476731902).

The publisher’s description reports that Peace’s mother earned less than $15,000 a year, but does not attach a year to that figure. It should be understood as a detail in the description of Hobbs’s book, not as a dated statistic about Newark or families more broadly.

How the film frames Peace’s life

Rob Peace is a biographical drama written, directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Associated Press discussed the film around its 2024 Sundance premiere. Ejiofor said Peace’s story “did not fit neatly into familiar tropes about rough beginnings, incarcerated fathers or overly simplistic ideas about success and ‘getting out.’” That is the filmmaker’s account of his approach, not independent proof of every event in Peace’s life.

Ejiofor also described the film’s intended emotional balance: “By the end of the film, you’re not just left with this bleakness. It’s obviously a tragic story, but it’s much, much richer than that.” Producer Alex Kurtzman said, “You don’t make movies like this for money. You don’t make movies like this for any reason other than this is an important story to tell.” Both quotations express the filmmakers’ perspectives and intentions.

Film and biography: what each can offer

Aspect The film, Rob Peace Hobbs’s biography
Form and scope A feature-length biographical drama; the sources reviewed do not specify its runtime here. A 416-page biography, according to the publisher.
Point of view Ejiofor’s adaptation, with a stated aim of resisting simplistic success-and-escape narratives. Written by Hobbs, Peace’s Yale roommate, and presented by the publisher as a biography.
Family and community The AP describes the film’s effort to convey the complexity of Peace’s ties across different worlds; the sources do not provide a scene-by-scene account. The publisher describes a life involving relationships and multiple social contexts; the sources do not provide a chapter-by-chapter comparison.
Fact-checking limits The available sources do not establish which scenes reproduce specific events or provide a scene-by-scene fact check. The reviewed publisher and author pages describe the book but do not independently verify every biographical detail.

The film and book are related accounts, not interchangeable records. The film presents a dramatized interpretation; the biography offers a longer-form account by someone who knew Peace at Yale. The available sources do not support treating the film as a verified transcript of events.

Why the “getting out” story is incomplete

It is tempting to cast Yale as a clean break from home and to interpret Peace’s later choices as either proof of success or a failure to escape. The accounts summarized here point to a more complicated life: educational achievement could coexist with deep family and community ties, and those connections should not be used as a shortcut to explain his death. The film’s stated resistance to familiar tropes is a framing choice; the underlying facts still need to be distinguished from interpretation.
