Rob Peace is based on the life of Rob DeShaun “Shaun” Peace, a gifted Yale graduate whose achievements and family responsibilities existed alongside the pressures of poverty, incarceration, and community ties. Written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, the 2024 film adapts Jeff Hobbs’s nonfiction book, The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace.
Who was Rob Peace?
Rob DeShaun “Shaun” Peace was born in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1980. His mother, Jackie, worked to give him access to private education. He attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, where he excelled academically and in water polo, then enrolled at Yale University to study molecular biophysics and biochemistry. He also worked in a laboratory and the university cafeteria. Netflix reports that he graduated with honors in 2002, later taught and coached at his former high school, and was killed in a drug-related shooting in 2011, aged 30. Netflix Tudum’s account of the film and Peace’s life provides this chronology.
Those facts resist a simple label. Peace’s education and accomplishments were real, as were the obligations and circumstances surrounding his family and community. The film’s story is not only a rise-from-adversity narrative or a cautionary tale; it follows the competing demands that shaped his life.
How his father’s imprisonment shaped the story
Peace’s father, Robert “Skeet” Douglas, was convicted of the shooting deaths of Charlene and Estella Moore and sentenced to life in prison when Rob was seven, according to Netflix Tudum. Rob believed his father was innocent and tried to help secure his release. An appeal temporarily led to Douglas’s release and dismissal of charges; a judge later denied the appeal, and Douglas returned to prison. He died there of brain cancer in 2006.

These accounts should be kept distinct: Douglas was convicted, and Rob believed him innocent. The cited coverage does not establish that Douglas was exonerated or independently resolve the question of guilt. Ejiofor has described the possibility of wrongful imprisonment as an open question, saying Douglas “may or may not have been wrongly imprisoned.” Netflix Tudum recounts the conviction and appeal; Ejiofor’s Moviefone interview preserves that uncertainty.
What the film is based on—and what the book adds
Rob Peace adapts The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, the nonfiction book by Jeff Hobbs. Hobbs attended Yale with Peace and became his friend and roommate. The book is a natural next read for viewers who want a fuller account than a feature film can provide. A film necessarily selects and compresses; that difference alone does not make either work a definitive fact-check of the other.
For both works, useful questions include what is emphasized about Peace’s responsibilities to himself, his family, and his community, and how the father’s contested case is presented. Without a scene-by-scene comparison, it would be misleading to declare the film wholly accurate or inaccurate.

In an August 2024 interview, writer-director Chiwetel Ejiofor said he was interested in the intersections of race, housing, education, and the criminal-justice system in Peace’s life, as well as questions of responsibility to oneself, family, and community. He described the starting point this way: “I think I was very interested immediately in understanding these intersections in the systemic realities that Rob faced.” Moviefone’s interview with Ejiofor discusses these themes and the adaptation.

That framing broadens the story beyond individual choices. Peace’s academic success did not erase the demands of family loyalty, and his father’s imprisonment was not simply background: Rob’s efforts to help him were part of the emotional and practical weight the film explores.
