Netflix’s 2024 documentary How to Rob a Bank tells the story of Scott Scurlock, a Seattle-area bank robber known as “Hollywood” for his elaborate disguise. The film follows a robbery series attributed to Scurlock and associates, then the investigation’s violent conclusion around Thanksgiving 1996. Its deeper subject is the double life and self-made legend Scurlock left behind.

Directors Stephen Robert Morse and Seth Porges build the film around interviews with Scurlock’s friends and accomplices, journalists who covered the robberies, and detectives and agents involved in the case, according to Netflix’s feature about the documentary. Those interviews offer multiple perspectives, but retrospective recollections are not independent verification of every detail.
Who was Scott Scurlock?
Netflix’s account describes Scurlock as a preacher’s son who began making methamphetamine while in college, used the proceeds to buy property in Olympia, Washington, and later turned to bank robbery after seeing the film Point Break. TIME’s reporting on the documentary adds that family and friends recalled he studied pre-med at The Evergreen State College and was expelled after making crystal meth. TIME also reports that his family gave the filmmakers access to his diary. Those biographical details are recollections presented through the documentary, not independently established records in the reporting cited here.

Scurlock’s nickname, “Hollywood,” referred to the conspicuous facial disguise he used. Netflix describes extensive makeup and prosthetics; FOX 13 Seattle quotes former Seattle Police robbery detective Michael Magan describing theatrical makeup and facial overlays. The disguise became part of the public identity around the case.
How many banks did Scurlock and his associates rob?
Published accounts differ in how they assign the robberies and describe the accomplices, so the figures should be read with their sources attached rather than treated as a single uncontested tally.
| Source | Reported count and amount | How the source frames the group |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix, 2024 | At least 19 bank robberies from 1992 through 1996; $2.3 million stolen. | Attributes the series to Scurlock and Steve Meyers. |
| TIME, 2024 | 19 confirmed robberies totaling over $2.3 million. | Describes Steve Meyers and Mark Biggins as central to the confirmed robberies, with Scurlock as the organizer. |
| Michael Magan, quoted by FOX 13 Seattle, 2024 | Investigators credited Scurlock with at least 14 or 15 banks; the final robbery yielded just shy of $1.1 million, according to Magan. | Reports the former detective’s account of what authorities credited to Scurlock. |
The difference is meaningful: a count of robberies attributed to Scurlock is not necessarily the same as a count of confirmed robberies involving a group of accomplices. Netflix’s feature and TIME’s account also describe the group’s preparation and disguises, but the documentary’s subject is the consequences and mythology of the crimes—not a practical guide.

The case ended during a pursuit that began with a bank robbery on the night before Thanksgiving 1996. FOX 13’s account, based on Magan’s recollection, gives more detail about the local sequence: an alarm came in at 5:40 p.m. for a Seafirst Bank in Lake City; officers encountered a van carrying Scurlock and two accomplices, and gunfire followed. FOX 13 reports that an injured suspect identified Scurlock and that officers later found him in a camper on Thanksgiving Day. Netflix says Scurlock died by suicide rather than surrendering.
TIME reports that Meyers and Biggins were each sentenced to 21 years and three months. It says Meyers was released in 2013 and Biggins in 2015.

Why does the documentary focus on double lives and self-mythology?
The filmmakers present the story as more than a crime chronology. Speaking to Netflix, Morse and Porges said: “This film is not just about the logistics of bank robbery. To us, it is about our awesome capacity as people to self-mythologize and our unending thirst for freedom — no matter the cost.”
In TIME’s interview, Porges described it as “a story about what it means to live a double life, what it means to live a life of lies, and how unsustainable that is.” Former accomplice Mark Biggins reflected on the personal consequences: “Once you do cross the Rubicon and start living that life you have to lie to everybody about everything, everybody you care about, everybody you meet.” The film’s account of Scurlock’s invented persona and eventual collapse is framed through those reflections, rather than as a celebration of the robberies.
