Yes. Netflix’s A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054 is a three-episode documentary about the real 2007 crash of TAM flight JJ3054 at São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport. The official account describes a landing on a wet, slippery runway, an aircraft that did not slow as expected, and a crash that killed everyone aboard and people on the ground.
What is A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054?
Netflix describes the Brazilian series as a three-episode documentary examining the human tragedy and circumstances surrounding the Congonhas accident. Its episodes are titled “The Ground,” “The Air,” and “The Landing.” Netflix announced its premiere for April 23, 2025.
The series includes accounts from experts, pilots, first responders and victims’ families, and presents the perspective of former ANAC director Denise Abreu. That is the documentary’s editorial approach; the accident facts below come from the final report by Brazil’s Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center, CENIPA.
What happened to Flight 3054?
On July 17, 2007, TAM Linhas Aéreas flight JJ3054, an Airbus A320 registered as PR-MBK, flew from Porto Alegre to Congonhas in São Paulo. CENIPA’s 2009 final report records that the aircraft landed on a runway reported by earlier-arriving crews as wet and slippery.

During the landing, the crew noticed that the ground spoilers had not deflected and that the aircraft was not slowing as expected. The aircraft veered left, ran off the runway near its departure end, crossed Washington Luís Avenue, and struck a TAM Express building and a fuel service station.
How many people died?
CENIPA records 187 people aboard the aircraft: six active crew members and 181 passengers. Everyone aboard died. The report also records 12 fatalities on the ground in the TAM Express building. Netflix gives the overall toll as 199 deaths.

What caused the TAM plane crash in São Paulo?
The available facts should not be reduced to a single error or treated as a complete technical explanation. CENIPA’s report documents several operational circumstances: the wet and slippery runway; the number 2 engine thrust reverser, which had been deactivated in accordance with the aircraft’s Minimum Equipment List; the ground spoilers’ failure to deflect; and the aircraft’s failure to decelerate as expected.
Those facts are part of the account, but a causal conclusion requires the report’s full analysis, not just its opening history. The official recommendation record addresses multiple safety areas, including runway-condition restrictions, surface friction and grooving, wet-runway performance considerations, and procedures for operating aircraft with an inoperative thrust reverser. The evidence summarized here does not establish that any one circumstance alone caused the crash.

What did the investigation recommend, and what does that prove?
CENIPA’s public recommendations are directed to aviation regulators, airport operators and airlines. They document safety actions the investigation recommended; a recommendation by itself does not prove that it was implemented, when it was implemented, or that it produced a particular later change.
That distinction matters when evaluating accounts of the disaster’s aftermath. Later reporting has discussed runway and warning-system changes, but those outcomes should be treated as established only when supported by official records from the relevant regulator, airport operator or manufacturer.

How should the documentary and the official record be read together?
