Baby Reindeer is a fictionalized drama drawn from experiences Richard Gadd has described, including stalking and sexual abuse—not a documentary or a scene-by-scene factual record. Gadd adapted it from his one-man stage show and plays Donny Dunn, a fictionalized version of himself. Fiona Harvey has said she believes she inspired Martha, disputes the series’ portrayal and sued Netflix. Those claims remain distinct from what the show dramatizes and from what a court has finally decided.
What is the true story behind Baby Reindeer?
The series draws on real experiences Gadd has said informed the story, but it reshapes them as drama. In a court filing, Gadd described the series as a “fictionalised retelling of my emotional journey through several extremely traumatic real experiences,” as reported by The Guardian. That description points to an emotionally grounded adaptation, not a promise that every scene, event or detail happened exactly as depicted.
Time’s account describes the story as a fictionalized version of Gadd’s experiences and reports that it includes stalking and sexual abuse. The show was adapted from Gadd’s one-man stage show; he plays Donny Dunn, a fictionalized counterpart. Its seven parts tell a crafted dramatic story, rather than serve as documentary evidence about every event.
Who is the real Martha?
Fiona Harvey publicly identified herself as the person she believes inspired Martha and denied the show’s account of her. The Associated Press reported that Harvey sued Netflix, alleging defamation and challenging the series’ “true story” presentation and portrayal of the character. These are Harvey’s statements and allegations, not established findings that the series’ depiction was accurate or inaccurate.

It is therefore more precise to say that Harvey says she was the inspiration for Martha than to treat the character as a verified, one-to-one portrait of a real person. The series is dramatized, and the competing accounts should not be collapsed into a definitive account of disputed events.
What did the court decide?
On September 30, 2024, The Guardian reported that a U.S. judge allowed Harvey’s defamation lawsuit to proceed and criticized Netflix’s “true story” framing, fact-checking and efforts to disguise the inspiration for Martha. That was a procedural decision, not a final verdict on liability or a ruling that resolved every disputed factual claim.

The available reporting establishes that ruling, but not the case’s later procedural status or final outcome. Do not treat the 2024 decision as proof that all of Harvey’s allegations were true, or as a final resolution of the lawsuit.

Gadd asked viewers not to try to identify people they believe inspired the series. In an interview with The Irish Times, he put his position this way: “If I wanted the real people to be found, I would’ve made a documentary.” The Independent also reported his intention not to comment further on real people who may have inspired the show. Online speculation and attempts to identify people should not be repeated as verified fact.
