One Life is based on the real efforts of British humanitarian Nicholas “Nicky” Winton to help children escape danger in Czechoslovakia as Nazi expansion threatened refugees before World War II. Anthony Hopkins plays Winton later in life, while Johnny Flynn portrays him as a younger man.
Who was Nicholas Winton?
Nicholas Winton was a British humanitarian whose work helping children leave Czechoslovakia is at the center of One Life. The film’s official synopsis says he travelled to Prague in December 1938, where families who had fled Nazi persecution faced worsening danger. It describes the children as predominantly Jewish.

The rescue was an organized effort, not a one-man operation. The BFI describes Winton as rescuing 669 children, while the British Council says he helped Central European children escape. Those summaries establish the scale and Winton’s central role, but do not provide a complete account of every organizer or how the total is counted.
How does the film tell Winton’s story?
One Life moves between the rescue period and Winton’s later life. Hopkins plays the older Winton and Flynn the younger one. The BBFC lists the 2023 film as a biographical drama with a runtime of 109 minutes; that is a UK listing and does not mean the film opened everywhere on the same date.

#1 Best Overall
The story’s later public recognition is part of the film’s narrative. The Associated Press reports that Winton’s work came to wider attention on the BBC programme That’s Life! in 1988, when he was reunited with some of the people he had helped.
How many children did Winton help rescue?
The BFI London Film Festival’s 2023 synopsis gives the figure as 669 children. It is best understood here as the figure used in the festival’s film description, rather than as a complete accounting of every transport or the contributions of all those involved.

What is the film based on?
The film’s official synopsis identifies Barbara Winton’s biography, If It’s Not Impossible…: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton, as its basis. The biography is a useful next step for readers who want a life-spanning account beyond the film’s dramatized, dual-era structure. The film and book are different forms of storytelling; the synopsis alone does not establish how individual scenes compare with the biography or historical records.
