Rolling Stone’s “The Triumph of BTS” is a May 14, 2021 feature published as the magazine’s June cover story. Its account of the group’s rise centers on more than chart success: it traces how BTS formed around RM, evolved from a hip-hop concept into a pop hybrid, and built music and imagery around personal themes and a close bond with fans. The story also made a notable cover-history claim: Yonhap reported that Rolling Stone called BTS the first all-Asian act to front the magazine in its 54-year history.
What the 2021 cover story set out to explain
Rolling Stone framed the feature as an account of “how seven young superstars rewrote music-biz rules and became the biggest band in the world.” That superlative is the magazine’s framing, not an independently established ranking. Published online on May 14, 2021, for the June issue, the story looked at BTS as a global pop act while asking how its formation, music, visual storytelling and relationship with fans had contributed to that reach.

The cover’s significance was also tied to representation. Yonhap reported Rolling Stone’s description of BTS as the first all-Asian act to appear on the cover in the magazine’s 54-year history. That claim belongs to the 2021 publication context; it is not a claim about the magazine’s cover history today.
How BTS formed around RM
The feature traces the group’s beginnings to RM, whom producer and company founder Bang Si-hyuk signed in 2010. Bang recalled, “When I first met RM, I felt a sense of duty that I must help him grow to become a great artist after acknowledging his musical talents and ways of thinking.” The other six members joined through recruitment and auditions, and the group was built around RM rather than assembled as a ready-made band.

BTS debuted in June 2013, according to the Associated Press. The profile describes an early concept with a stronger hip-hop emphasis that changed as singers joined and the group’s musical direction broadened. This was an evolution in approach, not a clean break from its origins.
From hip-hop emphasis to a pop hybrid
The profile presents BTS’s sound as a blend shaped by its members’ different roles and musical interests. Hip-hop was central to the initial idea, while the developing lineup made room for a wider pop palette. The band’s Korean-language identity and varied influences are part of that story; its evolution should not be reduced to a switch from Korean music to English-language pop.

The Associated Press places the 2016 album Wings among the milestones in the group’s growing momentum. In 2017, “DNA” entered the Billboard Hot 100. In 2020, “Dynamite,” BTS’s first all-English single, debuted at No. 1, as AP reported. These later milestones help situate the group’s scale by the time of Rolling Stone’s profile, but they should not be mistaken for the story’s central explanation of its appeal.
Personal themes, visual storytelling and fans
Rolling Stone’s account emphasizes weighty subjects and emotional openness in BTS’s music, alongside an ongoing narrative threaded through its music videos. The visual storyline gives listeners another way into the group’s work: songs and videos can be read together rather than as disconnected releases. The profile also describes a close relationship with fans as part of the group’s identity, not merely a measure of its popularity.

- Shrink-wrapped
This combination matters to the feature’s idea of “triumph.” BTS’s music could move across styles while its recurring themes and imagery offered continuity. The result, as the profile presents it, was a group whose creative identity was not confined to a single genre or a conventional image of pop masculinity.
What RM said about masculinity and partnership
Asked about the group’s image, RM told Rolling Stone: “The labels of what being masculine is, is an outdated concept.” He continued that challenging those labels was not the group’s intention, while saying they were grateful if their work had a positive impact. His point was not that BTS set out to campaign against a particular convention; it was that the group did not accept rigid restrictions as necessary.
Rank #4
The feature also portrays the relationship between the members and their company as unusually reciprocal. RM described it this way: “It’s very meaningful for us and also the company, that we admit and recognize each other as true partners.” Both quotations are from the 2021 interview, not new statements.

The Rolling Stone feature is a snapshot of BTS in 2021, not a current account. Later reporting by the Associated Press and a Rolling Stone retrospective describes the group’s military-service period, hiatus and return. Those developments belong to the later timeline; they should not be folded into the original cover story as though its writers were reporting them at the time.

- BTS is back with a brand-new anthology release titled Proof
Read in its own moment, “The Triumph of BTS” is a portrait of a group that had expanded beyond its early hip-hop premise without abandoning Korean-language identity, personal themes or a shared visual world. Its central argument is that BTS’s achievement came from the combination of musical change, a defined group identity and a relationship with listeners—not from one breakthrough single alone.
