Mickie James first appeared on WWE television as Trish Stratus’s devoted fan; that on-screen admiration gradually turned into an obsession and a challenge for Trish’s Women’s Championship. The rivalry’s defining moment came at WrestleMania 22 on April 2, 2006, when Mickie defeated Trish to win the title. Their Backlash rematch ended differently: Trish won by disqualification, leaving Mickie champion.
How the rivalry began: Mickie was Trish’s admirer
WWE introduced Mickie James in October 2005 as an enthusiastic fan of Trish Stratus. In the opening story, Mickie rescued Trish from a post-match attack by Victoria and presented herself as someone who idolized her. WWE’s retrospective describes how that admiration grew into an obsession. This was Mickie’s on-screen character premise, not a claim about the performers’ real relationship. That premise gave the feud a personal edge: Mickie began as someone seeking closeness to her idol, then became a rival seeking the championship Trish held. WWE later framed the title contest as a continuation of the obsession story. WWE’s August 2006 account of the rivalry

Why WrestleMania 22 was the turning point
WWE’s recap describes a hard-fought match in which Trish controlled stretches of the action and Mickie kicked out of a powerbomb. Mickie then hit the Mick Kick and covered Trish for the win. The result translated the personal storyline into a clear championship change: Mickie was no longer just the fan pursuing her idol; she had beaten the champion and taken her title. What happened in the Backlash rematch
At Backlash on April 30, 2006, Trish won the match, but not the championship. WWE says she dislocated her shoulder after being dumped outside the ring. Mickie attacked the injured shoulder and was disqualified after failing to break an illegal choke. Because the finish was a disqualification, the title stayed with Mickie. WWE’s Backlash match recap
What the rivalry’s story and results show
The feud worked on two connected levels: Mickie’s shift from devoted admirer to antagonist made the challenge personal, while the Women’s Championship gave that conflict a concrete prize. WrestleMania 22 was the central payoff; Backlash showed that the story continued after the title changed hands. WWE’s official accounts establish these milestones, rather than a complete episode-by-episode chronology.
